VITAL STATISTICS.

The vital .statistics for the month ending February 29 are : —Births, 134 ; deaths, 71 ; marriages 42. In the corresponding month of 1907 there were 124 births, 67 deaths, and 61 marriages. The number of births recorded (134) is the highest for February since 1888, whilst it is more than 17 years 6ince so many deaths ocurred in the second month of the "year. For the first two months of the present year there have been 298 births, the greatest number for the same period since 1880. It may be, and doubtless is, only a. coincidence, but the fact remains that since the establishment of the Public Health Department and the inauguration of the colossal expenditure on the Dunedin drainage scheme the death rate of the Dunedin district has gone up by leaps and bounds. It might also be mentioned that a forward movement, but not quite so pronounced, i 6 noticeable in the birth rate.
