OAMARU HARBOUR BOARD
THE DREDGING QUESTION. (From Our Own Correspondent ) OAMARU, February 25. At the annual meeting of the Oamarn Harbour Board to-day Mr R. Milliagn was elected chairman for the ensuing year. Three members were nominated for the position — Messrs Brownlee (retiring chairman), Rose, and Milligan. Mr Rose retired in favour of Mr Brownlee, and on a show of hands Mr Milligan was elected by eight votes to six. The chairman's report summarised the work of the year, mentioning 1 the opening of the Holmes wharf and berth and indicating certain matters which required attention during the coming year. At the ordinary meeting which followed the reports of Messrs A. M'lntyre and A. WalkeT on the proposals contained in Mr Morrison's report for the improvement of the dredge were read. Mr M'lntyre reported that the only material effect of tho alterations would be in saving time in steaming to and from the dumping ground. If the board were satisfied that the work done in the past by the dredge was sufficient for the purposes of the harbour, the repairs would put the vessel in a good condition of repair for some years. Mr Walker's report showed that after allowing; for siltation it would take the old dredge seven years to lift the quantity of spoil which would have to be removed to give the n«oessary d-eptK over the arei ileemeJ | necessary by the harbourmaster and other master mariners. The cost of dredging in the past had been Is *d per cubic yard 1 , whereas a new dredge would reduce the amount to 6d. The cost of altering the old dredge, and of dredging the required area would be about £30,000, while to place a new dredge in the harbour and to complete the work would cost £50,000. He recommends an up to date combined suction and bucket dredge. The board considered the reports in committee without coming to any definite conclusion.
