RECIPES.
Many farmers prefer to have "recipes" or tnedicmes already compounded, and we give Q, few likely to be useful on the farm generally : — Alterative Powder. — Sublimed sulphur, nitrate of potash, black antimony, and powdered fenugreek, of each 4oz. Dose, one to two tablespoonfuls occasionally i<n damped food.
Condition Powders. — Black sulphur, 3£oz ; powdered gentian, ginger, aniseed, and citrate of potash, of each 3oz ; powdered capsicum, £oz. Dose, one tablespoonful in damped food. Tonic Powders.— Carbonate ol iron, gentian, cinchona .bark, and fenugreek, of each 3oi. Dose, one tablespoonful once or twdce a dayCough Powder.— Extract of belladonna, 6 drachms ; carbonate of soda; 2|oz ; nitrate fcf potash, powdered' aniseed, and liquorice l^xat, of each 3oz. Mix carefully, and divide into 12 parts. Give one once or twice a day in damped food, or mix into an electuary with honey or treacle, and plaster on the tongue or teeth with a- wooden spatula. Grripe or Coldc DTink. — Oil of turpentine, £oz to 3oz ; tincture df opium, loz to lioz ; linseed oil, 1 pint. Keep in a stoppered or sealed bottle, and give as it is, followed by "some gruel. ,/Walk the' horse about, rub the belly, and prevent rolling. The drench anay be repeated in three hours if neceseary, but not more than two dosea should begdven. Mem. — Always give medicines time to ,act before repealing- the doae or giving other drugs having similar action, and do not wait until tihe animal is moribund before sending for the veterinary surgeon. "Fever" Mixture. — Extract of belladonna, 1 drachm ; nitrate of potash, ioz ; spirit of (bajnphor, ; eweet spirit of nitre, loz ; eohilion of acetate of ammonia, 4oz ; -water 10 haif-pint.' Useful in chills, colds, coughs, end when exhausted from severe exertion. Shoulder Lotion (when sore). — Sulphate of zinc and acetate of lead, of each ioz ; rain water, 1 quart. For hardening purposes in tender-skinned horses: Alum, loz; sulgyhuric acid, 1 d"raohin; rain water, 1 quart. IV>r the treatment of cuts and wounds, diluted Jeyes' Fluid or other alkaline,solution, of ooal tax is most useful. Carbolised oil, 1 in 30, is also useful for wounds, and as an antiseptic and lubricant in cases of assisted labour or difficult parturition in all tihe domesticated animals. Cleansing Drink for Cows. — Carbonate of ammonia, £oz; powdered ginger, ioz; Epsom salts, 12oz to 16oz. Those drinks supplied by the chemist have the crystals of tihe salts ground and coloured with turmeric, bole, or other pigment. Calves' Cordial.— Prepared 1 chalk, 2oz; Armenian bole, £oz ; tincture of catechu and tincture of opium, of each loz ; essence of peppermint, ioz; water to 12oz. Dose, one to four tsbtespoonfuls for calves, preceded by a full dose of castor oil; lambs and voting- pigs, a teftapoonful to a tablespoonfill, according to *8 e - , "My" Dressing for Sheep.— Perchloride of mercury, 40 grains; hydrochloric acid, 40 drops ; spirite of tar, 1 drachm ; oil of turpentine, 4oz; water to Boz. Shake the bottle and pour in a few drops about the cart struck. Foot-rot and "Foul" Dressing.— Butyr of tontiinonv and aloetie tincture of myrrh, of each equal parts. Apply after removing loose -and decayed horn. "Black" Oils.— Oil of turpentine and Barfcaroes petroleum, of each loz; sulphuric acid, I drachm; best olive oil, ± pint. Mix, eeeundem artem. Ringworm Dressing.— Black sulphur and 011 of turpentine, of each 2oz; sulphuric acid, ioz; fcurd, P>. Aipply with moderate friction with the gloved hand, after breaking down the grey orusts.— Farm and' Home
