INVERCARGILL D.L.F. LITERARY AND DEBATING CLUB.

Motto : " Excelsior." Thp above club hpld its weekly meeting in the club room, South British Chambers, on Wednesday, February 26. There were present of the committee Shasta (in the chair). Pakeha, Lola, Bewa, Miss Bobbie, Bolivar, and Homa. Sha&ta welcomed: Biz back after his absence of some months. The subject for the evening was, "Which Event Do You Consider Had the Greatest Influence on British National History?" The following are a few of the chief suggestions: The Reform Bill, the Spanish Armada, Battle of Wiatenloo, and Battle of Trafalgar. Each member either spoke or read a paper, and the subject proved very interesting. 1+ was decided to hold a picnic at Tisbury on March 11. All D.L.F. are invited to attend, and, given a fine day, it should be an enjoyable outing- Smolutg Flax s.nd Xiord! Wolseley were elected as a corrmittee to arrange details. The magazine debt has now been paid off, and we have to congratulate its committee on this achievement. It was decided to start the meetings sharp at 7.45 p.m., as some members have to go a considerable distance after. The Club closed at 9.45 p.m., to reopen on Wednesday, March 4, at 7.45. HOMA (Acting Secretary). The following is the syllabus arranged for three months' — March 4 — Open meeting. ■• 11 — Holiday reminiscences. 18 — Lecture on Shakespeare, by Lo'a. 25 — Special subject : "Should Women Entar Public Life?" April I—Open1 — Open meeting. B—Social8 — Social evening. 15 — Special subject: "Does Education Help the Worker?" 22 — Original poem (or pay a fine). 29- Essays on Sir Walter Raleigh. May 6 — Open meeting. 13— Debate: "Should Bachelors be Taxed?" 20— Lecture : "An Evening With Tennyson," by Shasta. 27 — Contribute to the evening's amusement by singing or reciting, or pay a fine.
