DUNEDIN. Monday Evening.

Miss Joachim- gave a- small afternoon tea, in her rooms one day last week as a farewell to Mrs Pud Mips Sa'e, who left for England on Sunday. The rooms were prettily d«coratea with flowers, and a most recherche little tea had been prepared. Besides Miss Joachim there were present Mrs and Miss Sale, Mts Joachim, Miss Wimperis, Miss F. Wimperis, Miss J. Wimperis (England), Mrs Colquhoun, Mrs Chapman. Mis& Chapman, Miss Chamberlain. Lady Mills, Mrs Ulrich, Miss X Ulrich. a.n<J Miss Marchant. On Tuesday Dean Fitchett and Mrs Fitchett arrived back from England, after an absence of about 12 months. Everyone was very glad to welcome them back to Dunedan again, and to see them both in such good 1 health and spirits. In the evening a social was held in All Saints' Schoolroom as a "welcome home." There was a very large attendance, the numbers not being limited to the parishioners. His Lordship Bishop Nevill m*de a few well-chosen re- j marks. The Dean then came forward and gave a short outline of hi» doings during the past 12 months. Some of his most interesting remarks dealt with hia tour in the Holy Land. At one end of the hall a large table held most of the cakes, sandwiches, etc.. whioh weTe handed round by the many ladies who had so kindly organised the gathering. During the evening some very charming duets, quartettes, and piano solos were given. Allen also left by the steamer for Melbourne, where she is to meet her brother, who is returning from England. Mrs Barclay, who leaves^ Dunedin shortly to take up her residence in Sydney, entertained a number of her friends at morning tea in the Kia-Ora rooms on Monday morning. On Saturday at a quarter to 2 o'clock Miss NdlLft Hoggitt, daughter of the late Mr B. C. Haggitt (Anderson's Bay), was quietly married at All Saints' Church, Dunedin, by the. Rev. Dean Fitchett, to Mr C. H. T. Belstead,,. of this city. The bride, who was given " away by Mir J. Haggitt, wore * becoming gown of cream serge, with a large crinoline straw hat of creena trimmed with chiffon. Her bridesmaid was Miss . Spence, who also wore cream, with a cream hat. Mr Alexander acted as best man. The bride and bridegroom afterwards left for the north. Mr Belste«d was the recipient of a travelling bag and marble clock from the staff of Messrs Sargood, Son, and Ewes. Last Saturday afternoon Miss Laura Grant (whose marriage to Mr Chas. L. Hart, of Christchurch, is to take place this month) entertained about 80 of her girl friends in the Dominion Tea Rooms, where a very enjoyable time, enlivened by music, was spent by all present. INVERCARGILL, February 29. The weather lately has been exceptionally line, and tennis, croquet, and rowing h»ve been greatly enjoyed. The many pretty oroquet lawns have had their full quota of players. Miss Thomson, "Lennel" ; Mrs Morrah, Gladstone; Mrs Walter Henderson, Tweed stieet; Mrs J. L. The Invercaorgill Tennis Club sent up a junior team on Wednesday last to try conclusions with the Gore Club. The latter were successful, winning by 10 games. The visiting team speak enthusiastically of the hospitality shown them by the Gore Club. On Thursday evening Mre Eyre, of Don i street, gay© a- very pleasant progressive bridge evening in honour of Mrs I. W. Raymond, 1 who is shortly leaving u» for England. Among those present were Mrs I. W. Raymond, Mrs Sharp, Mrs Bicknell. Mrs J. L. Watson, Mts Haggitt, Mrs G. Robinson, Mrs Ellis, Mira Ha-ndyside, Mrs Callender, Mrs Walter Henderson, etc. Mrs Haggitt and Mrs J. L. Watson won the first and second prizes. On Friday evening Miss Thomson, "Lennel," entertained a few friend's at bridge-. Mrs G. Robinson, Northend, also had a small bridge evening. Miss Sybil Haggitt is visiting Mrs B. A. Miss Sutton has returned from her holiday in Ashburton. Mies Ferguson, of the Girls.' High School, left la-st week on a trip to Europe. She will be absent about a year. Mts Every is also leaving for England, on a visit to Mr and Mrs Raymond Every. The induction of the Rev. J. G. S. Bartlett took place on Sunday last in St. Luke's ChuTch, in the presence of a. large congregation. Dr. Nevill conducted the morning | service, and in the evening Mr Bartlett preached his initial sermon to a full church. ! The welcome social to the new vicar tock place on Tuesday evening. St. Luke's Hail had been very effectively decorated, and presented a charming appearance. Speeches were I made by Rev. Jamieson and Messrs M'Dour.ll, ' Williams, Duncan, and Dr Whitton. Rev. Bartlett suitably responded. Musical itoms by Mesdames Davis. Batson, Mowbtay, and Mr Moss and the glee party contributed to the success of the function. The Rev. Archdeacon Gould came from Dunediu on purpose to open the new church room at Newborough on Thursday evening. The little ha-li was packed, a large number having journeyed from town to show their interest in the venture, and also io obtain a glimpse of their dearly-loved ex-vicar.
