WEST AUSTRALIAN NATIVES

PERTH. February 22. The report of the Commissioners appointed to inquire into certain charges against the Canning expedition of 1906 has been considered by the Cabinet.

Tlie Commissioners hold that compulsion and cruelty during captivity by chaining the natives was, under any circumstances, unlawful ; that want of thought was shown by the members of the expedition ; that the connection method adopted in o»e instance was absolutely unjustifiable, but that the charges of immorality towards native women had since been withdrawn, and were absolutely unfounded. The deaths on the- previous exf>editions would probably not have occurred had the natives been used to show their wells.

The Commissioners refer to previous' instances where the practice of chaining the natives to comj^el them to show where water was had been resorted to, and state that Canning sought to ensuie the safety of the members of his party by acting as he did.
