A STRANGE ACT.

ALLEGED ATTEMPTED SUICIDE,

A case of what at present seeirw, to be a ' fortunately unavailing attempt to commit suicide occurred on the Elgin road extension of the Mornington tram line about 7 p.m. on the 19th, when a man named ' John Thomson threw himself in front of an approaching car ajid was struck and knocked down, but not seriously injured. It appears that Thomson, who is a single man, aged about 40 years, and has recently been employed on the Dunethn-Mosgiel i railway duplication works, met a friend of his named William Craik in the afternoon. Craik then noticed that Thomson wa6 rather low-spirited, and took him for a walk in the direction of Caversham. He subsequently took Thomson to his house at Elgin road, Mornington, and there gave him tea. Thomson then exrjieseed a desire , to go down town again, and Craik fell I in with his wiehes. The two were walking along the extension line together, and just ! as a car was approaching them Thomson, ' without warning, suddenly threw himself in front of it, with the result that he was struck by the car and knocked down. He did not, however, receive any serious in- ' juries, but was taken to the Hospital. He was subsequently lak'u to iha 1 olice Station. .
