CITY CORPORATION GASWORKS.

THE KXTENSTONS TO PLANT. EXCELLENT PROGRESS. The extensive additions and alteratiors roiv being effected to the City Corporation Gasworks pl.int-on the Anderson's Bay roar! are being vigorously pushed forward, and at the present time the greater portion of the gasworks yard presents an exceedingly active appearance". The principal work now in hand is the pile diiving for the foundations of the new holder, which is to stand right alongside the two holders now in use. Here a 12 h.p. pile driving engine, with a lifting capacity of a 30cwf pile and a 2 ton monlcoy attached to a derrick 52ft high, has been in motion daily for some weeks past driving deep down into mother earth huge ironbark piles. In all some 176 of these piles aie to be utilised, and the grea!er portion of them has now been driven. E\ceedinglv good progress with this particular work has boon made by Mr Wat c on Rhodes (the contractor). But the sinking of the~e pile^ — they vary in length from 50ft to 70ft — is by no means the completion of the foundations. The greater part of (he interior vull be excavated, and some 1750 casks of cement, and a ]ifce number of loads of gravel, t/'o whole reinforced with 6teel

netting, etc., will be thrown in. In another week.'s time this work should be commenced on. In all probability the end of March •should <=cc a start made with the erect'on of thp new holder. Inc:de:itallw the new holder will have a ho'dinjr capacity of 1,000,0C0 cubic feet of sas. It will b430ft <n diameter and 120 ft hiph, or about 50Tt higher than the present gasworks chimney. It is somewhat doubtful at piesent whether the holder has been shipped from I-ondon, but the ,srobabilitie« are lhat it was. The manufacturers. Mev=r* Westwood and Wright, will send four men out with the holder to superintend the work of erection, which will probably last over the batter part of «i\ months. At the same time as the holder arrives, pipes are to be brought out for the purpose of setting un connection between the city works and those at Cavfrshain. for it j« the intention of the City Council io u-e its recontlv acquired property at Caver«ham for storage purposes only. ttas will be manufactured at the works on the Andei*on's Bay load alone What will be wanted with the greatly in creased manufacturing faculties being introduced will be a hi" holding plant. ,The two holders now in use at the city works give a combined holding capacity of 300 000 cubic feet, the new holder w ill be capable of storing 1.0C0.030 cubic feet_ while the holdei at Caver^ham has a storage capacity of 200,000 cubic feet, equal in all to 1. 500.000 cubic feet, which is the exact quantity of gas the city will be able to store. The confining of the manufacture of ga« to one centre, namely the works on the Ba-\ road, will greatly tend to economy of working and so forth, and will ensure a uniformity in tho qualiU of the gas. The roofing for the new retort hou«e. the supplying of which was seemed by tender, is now in Now Zea land water*.
