CIVIC RECEPTION TO THE REV. JAS. FLANAGAN.

In connection with the illustration given elsewhere of the reception given to the Rev. James Flanagan by the Mayor of Dunedin, some idea of the social -work carried on by the Primitive Methodist South-east London. Mission, in which Mr Flanagan is "a distinguished worker, may be gathered from the fact that last summer 5230 poor children and several hundreds of ' widows and orphans were taken for " a day in the country," while 400 cripples and poor children particftatedin the benefits of the Seaside Home. During the year 6310 homeless and destitute men and women were supplied with meals ; 8616 ill-clad and shivering- men and women were given clothes ; free bres.kfasts were given to 33,14-4- hungry children ; Christmas dinners to 850 cripples and waifs; whilet 3400 poor families who live daily at starvation noint were assisted with food, clothing, and nursinar. The Sisters of the- Setlement raid 17,785 visits to slum homes, nearly 2000 sick cases were visited and nursed, and 1000 assisted to medical attendance and helped in otlrer ways. Girls from the slums are trained ~ fn the' home for domestic service.

Of the 37,728 Chinese coolies on the Rand on November 30, . 66 died in the course of last month and 1936 were repatriated, leaving 35,676 in the country on December 31.
