HOKITIKA ROSS RAILWAY.
| NEARING COMPLETION. (Fbom Otra Own Cobrespondent.) GREYMOUTH, February 24. A Greymouth Star correspondent writes that the railway from Hokitika to Ross has been completed to Ruatapu, a distance of eight miles. Beyond that the formation works are completed right to Ross. The opening of the line, however, is delayed by the non-completion of the Totara bridges. In a short distance v there are seven bridges, five of which are now com-* pleted. The end of March should see the, next one out of hand, when' the main structure over the Totara River will be taken in hand. This bridge it is hoped to complete in September, and that the i whqle line will be ' opened for traffic ! in November. In anticipation of this ] event, all the 'adjacent timber lands ' have been taken up. and two sawmills will be erected. One is already connected to the railway, while a tramway is -in courae of construction .to bring the other within touch. .
The Lambeth Guifdians* have decided to ' emigrate 30 pauper"? children to Canada. One member thought i%.was a. pity to send the girls out while these was such a crying demand far •ViTn'n*T" mrvute at Home.
