February 21. — It has been raining steadily all day. and with every appearance of having set in* for a gocd spell of it The ram was sadly needed, for the stock on the coast -were in despexate straits for want of water. Since the rain at the beginning of the week the dry. burnt paddocks have assumed a tinge of gTeen, and this present downpour •will still further revive vegetation. It is interesting to note that the drought broke on tift 16th mst.— j'ust two days later than ir 1907. . , . , The Crops. — Harvesting operations, -which -were in full swing, are of necessity suspended until the weather once more takes up. There are some really splendid crops. Mr Kussell has some of his gram already stacked and several others are ready to iollow suit. . The Oominar Local Option Poll.— During last -week we "had the privilege of ? house-to-house visitation from Mr Lawrence, who is canvassing the electorate in the interests of the- New Zealand Alliance. FlaxnulL— The local flasmill (Messrs Shiels) was clcsed down some weeks ago ior lack of water. l( will be some time "before it reopens. The camp is quite deeerted save for the jverywhere popular coo* (Mrs T. M'Hendry) and family. Entertainment. — On the evening of Monday, the 17th mat., an interesting entertainment took "place ir the shape of a social and presentation to Mrs George M'lndoe on the occasion )f hea leaving the district. "Though the weather was so unfavonrabls, some 40 persons gathered in the schoolhouse on the " Flat." The Chairman (Mr A. ~Reiowski), in a characteristic speech, referred •to the regret felt by her friends at Mrs M'lndoe' s departure, and on their behalf presented her with several useful tokens of esteem in the shape of a dinner set, four, 'bedroom chairs, and a washstand and ware.' Mr E. Gardyne responded briefly on Mrs M'lndoe's behalf. A song by Mr W Arming. a recitation by Mr A. Bekowski. and a number of good giaphophone selection? by Mr K. Simpson, .vc.re followed by supper and the inevitable dance, which last was prolonged till S a.m. Messrs G Leslie and R. Gaordyne supplied the music, and Mr W Hutton acted as M.C. Miss B. Hutton has succeeded Mrs M'lndoe as postmistress There is much dissatisfaction over mraour* of projected changes in *he locaJ postal arrangements.
