February 24. — The- annual meeting of th« Cemetery Trustees was he'd the other evening, when the two newly-»ppointed trustees — Messrs Jamiesou and M'Gerry — took- their .=eats. M. James Steven was re-e'ected chairman of the board — a position he has occupied for the last six yeaxs. Picnic — The Waikouiaiti School picnic w«> " held at Karitnne on Friday, the 14th inst. There was a large gathering of children, and they appeared to thoroughly enjoy themselves Seveial oil kunc-hes were engaged, and part of the afternoon was spent on tHe river. The teachers and members of the School Ccrnnuttee were in attendance.
Bowling — The handicap club -tournament ia now being played off. and is providirg some surprises and a gocd deal of amusement. Mr T. Reid, the^ local postmaster, who is an enthusiastic player, is conceding from 14 to 34 points, and, cons during the state of the green, is too severely handicapped. It is too soon yet. however, to select the winner.
Weather — While the occasional shower., that h»ve fallen lately have bc«n very acceptable, much nMre rain is required to ensure a fiesh growth of grass. Turnips have, on the whole, withstood the dry weather very ■well, and, with rain, should p-.ovide _a fail amount ci winter feed.
Eariy Settlers. — The annual meeting oi tin Wa kouaiti Branch of the Otago Early Settlers' Association was held en Friday lost in the Public Read-ing Room. The Mayor (Mr A. HeckleT) occupied the chair, and there was a large attendance. The secretary (Mr Thomas Allccck) presented his report for the> year, and also the balance sheet, which showed that th&re was a credit, balancrn fie bank of £10 4s 2d. It was decided to celebrate the sixty-eighth anniversary of the. settlement of Waikonaiii by holding a picnic, and also evening entertainment on Friday, Maich 13. Strong committees were formed U carry out ihe necessary arrangements, and the secretary was authorised! to invite a number of well-known gentlemen to attend. It was agreed to engage Mr Beath's orchestra to supply the music for the afternoon, and a.so tor the concert in the evening.
