THE RHODES SCHOLARSHIP.
AUCKLAND CANDIDATE SELECTED. WELLINGTON, Februaiy 21. The Rhodes Scholar Selection Committee met to-day at Government House, Lord Plunket presiding, to select the New Zealand Rhodes scholar for 1908. The committee's choice fell upon Mr Soloman Nethcin Ziman, of the Auckland University. AUCKLAND, February 21. Tho successful candidate was born in 1886 at Wellington, where- he attended tho Clyde Quay Sbhcol. Coming to Auckland in 1897, he attended the Newton West School, and there he won a junior foundation scholarship at the age of 11. This took him to the Grammar School, where, in 1800, he won the senior district echolarship. In DccembeV, 1903, he was dux of the Grammar School. At the same time Mr Ziman got a junior university scholarship in mathematics, Latin, science, English, and French. Since 1903 he ha 6 been at the University. At the end of 1905 he passed ihe first section of the B.Sc. degree, and got the Sir Geoige Grey fcholanslyp in science. He completed his B.Sc. degree, and took two senior scholarships in mathematics (pure and applied), and, being debarred from taking both, he selected the applied. Mr Ziman has iust sat for his M.Sc. degiee, and the result is pending. In athletics the new Rhodes scholar has a good record. He represented the Grammar School for two years in football, and for three veai\* in its shooting team. He won the 100 yards championship of the school in 1902, and also several other school races. Ho was in the first football fifteen at, the University and in the first hockey eleven, and al c o represented the University in running at the Easter tournament m 1905. At present he is president of the Students' Association, and he has been an officer of all the University athletics
Professor Egerton (chairman the Professorial Board) describes Mr Ziman a-s a particularly strong man educationally. He states that, he is one of thf most brilliant mathematicians the UniverMl\ has had for many years. Mr Ziman was a candidate for the Rhodes scholarship last year.
(From Our Own Correspondent ) WELLINGTON, February 21. I undeifitand that the Auckland-candi-date for the Rhodes scholarship had practically a walk-over against the other candidates this year, be Hag in point of scholarship head and shoulders above the other*. It was stated in some quarters that the fact that Mr Ziman's family are comparatively well-to-do would tell against hi« chances, but the selectors, of course, would not consider that as any handicap.

The special committee sot up to consider the salary and duties of a working manager for the Blenheim gasworks has decided to recommend the Borough Council to offer a salary of £150 anU free house, lighting, and firing.
