The Glaciers of South Westland. TO THE EDITOR.

Sir. — South Westlandera are greatly exercised in their minds ove. a par in your i»sue of 22nd i^lt On page 17 there appears what purports to be an interview by a Dominion leporter with a, ceitain Mi John M'Leod, who claims to have acted as guide on the Franz Jo=ef and Fox Glaciers. Who is he, anyhow? is the question asked; and no one can answe.. We wonder if someone has been hoaxin^ the Dominion nian, for most, if not all, of his statements are, to say the least, misleading. We don't think he ■wcmld go far on either glpcier with' his hands in his pockets. His " yarn " about walking 100 yards up the 9tream in the natural tunnel is a bit of a romance His statement about the Franz Josef travelling 2Jm in six years is. too funny for anything. Why, an, ice axe that the Rev. H Js'ewton lost in a crevice tra\elled about half a mile or threequaiteis m 18 months, and was found by Mr Batson nea the terminal face. Mr M'Leod talks of a motor car coming through fioni Grey to within two miles of the Franz Josef We think the Nulli Secundus flying machine would havf a better chance of getting through than the motor car. He misleads, too, about the Wataroa River being budged. The contractor is making good progress with the bridge Lut it will be months ye) before the budge and approaches ire finished. He misleads, too, about the riiers ju=t now being easily forded "Why, tins mid«tin>mer is really the aorst time of the j ea. for fording, as the snow melting keeps the nveis fiom lft tt 18m higher than in winter. Well, Si. the above may appear to be meant to discourage tourists from visiting the boautic= and wonders of South Westland Not so ; we are anxious to see as many visitors as can come. But we don't want them to come here under a misai^prehension, and then gi\e us a bad n<une Thore is a good weeidy mail coach service under the able management of Mr Jehu AcTamson, owner of the conveyance* The smaller riveis are forded by the coaches, and at the laige ones he has a lelay of vehicles, and the passengers are ferried ovei Given ordinary fine weather there is neither d fficulty noi danger in reaching the glaciers People wishing to visit them can leave Greymonth on Monday morning spend two dajs at Fianz Josef, and be back in Greymouth the folloivnio Monday in time io catch a steamei foi Nelson or Wellington. For confirmation of abo\e anyone can refer to Mr Donne. Trusting I have not encroached too much on joar -valuable space, — I am, etc, toOUTH Westla:;dee.
