February 13. Dry weather still continues, with no sign of rain. The heat is also keeping up. and. together with the hot winds, growth ha? been considerably affected. All the farmers in this locality have completed cutting their crops, and harvest hands are ■\ery scarce. I Fruit-growers are having a busy time j in consequence of the fruit coming; in j rapidly owing to the heat. Good prices are being- realised, and this season should prove the most beneficial experienced by giowers for a number of years. Fruit is plentiful, and ere long prices must. fall. Mining is quiet in all branches, and sluicing thrqughodt Hip di-triot 16 at a standstill owing- to t.he scarcity of water. The majority of the gorge dredges are repairing in preparation for the comingseason's work, which at present ghes every indication of starting early, as the mer is steadily rising 1 . At a special meeting- of the local Borough Council held last evening it was decided to apply to the Governor to proclaim the fire district of Alexandra extinct. This means that the Alexandra Fire Board will oease to exist. Mr William Elphinstone Malcolm, of Burnfoot, near Langholm, whose death occurred recently, at the age of 90, was j the son of Admiral Sir Pulteney Malcolm, the guardian of Napoleon during his captivity at St. Helena.
