Mondiy, February 17. On Thursday morning Miss Ulnch gave a small tea for Mrs Barclay, who is shortly leaving for Sydney, where she is going to take uo her lesidence.
On Friday afternoon Miss M'KeMa'-, Queen stieet, gave an "At home" as a faicwell to Mrs Barclay and Miss Ra.n^ay The tea table was aitiatically arranged wnh sweet peas Among those present \\ ere — -Mrs M'Kella-, Mis Fergus Mrs Siiv lair, Mrs Ramsay, Miss Fergus Mi=- Ramsay. On Saturday afternoon the Pumate and Mrs Nevill gave a gaiden paity. The day was a perfect one, and the gardens and flowers were eniojed to the utmost. Bishopsg'ove presented a very gay appearance with all the smartly-dressed people walking about amongst the beautiful trees and through the native bush. The Primate and Mrs Nevill received their guests in the hall, from where they went into the dining room and partook of delicious tea, coffee, and oakes. The table looked lovely, being most tastefully decorated with shaded calliopsis and gypsophilla. Tables had been placed in amongst tho tiees and on the side lawn, so that the guests were. able to partake of fruit salad, jellies, and claret cup under the shade of the trees. A band played the whole afternoon many good selections of well-known airs. Mrs Nevill wore a most becoming gown of black peau de soie over white silk, white lace insertion trimmings, large back hat with feathers. Miss Fynes-Clintoii wore a stylish giey muslin with white chiffon vest, smart black hat; Mrs Bridgman, soft bronze - green silk, white lfice vest with touches of pale blue, stylish green and blu& toque with long pale blue feathei ; Lady Mills, black crepe de chine, bodice much trimmed' with cream lace and insertion, white ostrich boa, large black picture 'mt; Mrs Sinclair Thomson looked well in a v.oict-colouied cloth coat and skirt, hat to ninte 1 !. Mis Frank Fitchett, dainty lime gicf; u^-oie, bodice banded with a daiker sh'.de cf green velvet, and also trimmed %\ > t h cieam net, large grean crinoline straw trimmed black feathers and pink roses; Mis Sa'e, a grey and white striped silk dress, with large lace collar, trimmed' pale blue velvet, neat black hat ; Mrs Russell Ritchie looked extremely well in brown, w/th smart brown toque composed of blown tulle and' violets ; Mrs Browulie wore a striking dress of rose pink silk voile becomingly trimmed with velvet of a darker hue. black hat with blue and ro=e coloured rosettes ; Mrs Carew. white muslin trimmed with Jace, large black hat; Mrs T'heomin, a handsome gown of black silk trimmed with lace, black toque ; Mrs Batchelor, soft blue crepoline bodice arranged with cream lace and knots of pink velvet, black hat with pink ; Mrs Stanley Batchelor, grey cloth costume. Leghorn hat with, bunches of pink sweet peas; Mrs Riley, white flowered voile bodice prettily trimmed' with scalloped lace and laced through with black velvet, laTge black feather hat; Mis-3 Kerr, a smart cream cloth costume, the coat being turned back with violet velvet revers," dainty maivve hat , Miss Ulrich, pretty soft sea-green silk, made with high waist, bodice lavishly trimmed with cream spotted net and velvet, spotted net hat with bunches of violets; Miss Macassey, cream costume, smart hat trimmed with pink ; Miss Joachim, fawn costume, hat en suite. A great number of people assembled to say bon voyage to Mr and Mrs Ritchie and Miss Ritchie, who left by the Warrimoo on /Wednesday for Sydney, en route for England, •where they are to be absent until about the end of the year. Dr and Mrs and Miss^Corcen Ogston also left for England by the same boat. Mrs Henry Orbell 'and Miss Orbell returned to Waikouaiti on Friday. There was a quiet wedding at St Andrew's Presbyterian Church. Wellington, on Saturday, January IS, when Miss Ada Harper, daughter of the Key. W. Harper, of Edinburgh, wa? married to Dr T. A. Mac Gibbon, of Hawera. son of Mr T. Mac Gibbon, of Mataura. The ceremony ivas performed by the Rev. J. Gibson Smith. The bride wore c charming frock of white silk eolenne, with a veil and wreath of orange blossom and white heather, and she carried a bouquet of watcrhlies, stephanotis, a,nd maidenhair. Miss Eva Mac Gibbon, sister of the bridegroom, who acted as bridesmaid, wore a frock of cream voi'e. with a cream plumed pictiue hat, and carried a bouquet of pale pink rone 3. Helmore and Miss Helrnore gave a most delightful garden party at Mi Helmore's residence in Fendalton, where the lovely old garden was looking at its bist. Orbell has> returned to Timaru. The Misses Webster, who have been to Culverden for Miss Charley's wedding, returned home on Friday. Dr and Mrs Garland (Oaniaiu) are staying at Warner's Hotel. Madame Clara Butt gave a huge concert here last night. She wore a lovely gown of dull green spangled chiffon and lovely diamonds. She was the recipient of many lovely bouquets. After the concert a tremendous crowd gathered in front of Warner's Hotel and cheeiecl her on her ariival there, and continued to do so until she appeared on the balcony and smiled and bowed. Amongst the vast audience were Mr and Mrs A Rhodes, Mr and Mrs Bany (England), Mrs Palmer, Dr and Mrs Garland (Oamain), Mrj and Miss Westmacott, Mr and Mrs H. Cottenll, Mr and Mrs Alister Clarke, Mr Buckley, Mr Lane, Misses Rseves. Mrs and Miss Fox, Mr and Mrs Wardrop, Mrs Payne. WELLINGTON. Februaiy 15. A garden party that was much enjoyed was given by Mrs Hay ward last Thursday afternoon at her pietty new home, Waiwetu, Lower Hutt. Joining the house is a charming setting of natural bush, through which many paths have bjen made that lead to mstic seats and summer-houses. Mrs Hayward, who received her guests at the veiandah, wore a delightfully cool gown of grey siHr voile, with dainty lace vest and large , black- picture hat with ostric-h feathers. Miss Hayward was daintily frocked in white msertioned muslin. Among the guests I noticed Mesdames Fitchett, Lee, Finch, -Tringham, Izard, Barraud, Elliot, Matthews, Mowbray, M'Lean, Dykes, Peaice, Mill, Vallance. and the Misses Lukin, Turner, Seddon, Elliot, Wilson, Johnst-one, and Allport. Several Wellington girls are enjoying the excitement of collecting pretty things, planning gowns, etc., and' rushing wildly between, dressmaker and milliner, an ordeal which inevitably preceeds a trip to England. Miss Harcourt and Miss Grace Harcourt leave with their father next month on a tcur of the -world. Miss Flora Brandon and Miss Deans (ChriEtchurch) are also booking passages' together shortly. Mass Nancy Loughnan, who has been staying in Wellington for a few weeks, has returned to Christchurch. Mrs R. Levin and tier little Dorothy are in town for a few days. The engagement is announced of Miss Hazel Brindley, second daughter of Mr J. W Bruidlev, to Mr Cyril Mackellar, of the Bank of X'S.W. Dr and Mrs Ewart left last week on a holiday trip to Wangamu. Mr and Mrs George Broad (Napier) are on. a visit to Wellington. Mrs Johnstone- (Wanganui) is staying with relatives in town, prior to her tup to England. Miss Violet Bremnei is staying at Tetihai Bay, the gue3t of Mrs Elliot. Dr and Mrs Hassall (.Porirua) are on a visit to Ngaiata. Mr and Mi« J. F Mills have returned fiom their visit to England. Mrs Hddfield is the guest of her mother, Mrs Tuckey.
