NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIP.

Mr Bntterneld, secretary to the Tourn* ment Committee, acknowledges the followm| amounts with thanks- — Collected by Mr James Fraser, Colyton: — J. Fraser ss, B. W. Brown Is, A. Smitl 2s Gd, W. G. P. Is, J. Michie Is, T. &. Smith 2s 6d. H S. Is 6d;— total, 14s 6<3. Collected by Mr Jas. Robertson, Tapanui: J. Robertson ss. R. Beauchanip, A Sympathiser (2), 2s 6d each;— total, 12s 6d. Mr Thos Stephens, Otekaike Station, Oanmu. writes •—" Herewith I have pleasur* in forwarding postal note for 10s as donation towards N.Z. championship tourney. Trusting you will have a successful meeting." A meeting of the Tournament Cornniitte^ was held on Thursday evening last at Hilliker's saloon, Princes street, when there was a good attendance, Mr Hilhker occupying the chair. The financial report showed a, satisfactoiy position for the number of lists received, but less than a quarter of the- required amount is in so far. The resignation was received of Mr A. Matheson, treasurer, who puiposes taking a trip to the Ol<| Countiy next month. The resignation was leceived with regret. Mr D Trainor was unanimously elected to the vacancy. Another meeting of committee is to be held on Wednesday evening, 26th inst., at 8 o'clock', in the Otago Club. Maclaggan street, when there will be brought forward a schema by which every draughts player in the district may be reached. Mr S. J. Relf, Palmerston North, writes a* follows. — "To induce a larger entry, classify; the players. Say, a champion class, foi all who ha^e won first, second, or third money; second clbbs, all others that have won publia money; third class, all who, like myself, w:sh to have a gams with fairly strong players. The first and second prize-winners in second class to enter champion class nertf' year. I think there has been about £300 collected for championship tournaments, and over £200 has gone to the first, second, ancE thiid prize-takers, comprising eight or nine different men. I think, Sir, you will agree" with me m adding an extra class to encourage, second-class players in the town where the tournament is played. Please convey my best wishes to all. I hope you will have a good tournament." In the opening part of his letter Mr Rell is .arguing in favour of the all-round system of play, evidently labouring under a misappiehension on the point The whole of Me Relf's letter is a plea for encouraging » large entry. We would again point out that that is exactly what the committee hava aimed at in Dunedin. Not only has the allround system been retained, but with it the sealed handicap is a much more radical measure for securing a b'g entry than even Mr Relf's classification scheme. With the sealed handicap, third or fourtb-iate players havo virtually the same prospect of sharing tha pnze-money as the leading players have; the practice and experience obtained will be immeasurably more valuable than anything possib'e by classification; public interest in the tourney will be maintained to the finish; and competitors themselves will not become disheartened and indifferent because they ara ■' out of it " when only half-way through th« tourney, for no one knows what position ha may occupy wllen the handicap is announced. Taking these points alone, it is- evident that 1 , if popularity is the desideratum, the allY lound handicap system entirely fills the bill. So, if Mr Relf can spare the time to coma south at Easter for the tourney, he is likelj to enjoy himself more than in a-ny previous contest.
