MESSAGE FROM THE SEA.
NELSON, February 13
The Collector of C istoins at Nelson rece ved a wire from the wharfinger at Motmka stating that the following message was nicked up in a bottle on the beach at Luke Island:— "December 25, 1907. For God's sake send help ; ship Lena wrecked on North Cape; alf saved, but have 1.0 provisions ; Lena left Yew York, November 24 bonnu for Chatham Islands with carao of wheat ; salvage imnossiblo, as ship tell to pieces about midnight, two hours af'or it struck; send help £t once; about 20 survivors, but near y starving. — Ja>'lS Romxsox chief mate."
The Marine Department has been advieed,, but probably tha matter is a hoax, as the voyage is impossibly short, a wheat cargo for the Chathams unlikely, n| i >-l' e North Cape out of the course.
Just over 30 years ago a needle entered thfi,. left foot of Mrs Walker, wife of_ a consulting: engineer, residing at Union srrove, Aberdeen. A day or two ago Mrs Walker felt something sham matching- in the right sleeve of her nightdress, and on examining her arm found the forgotten needle protruJinsf below the elbow.
