By Hori Poekb. MELBOURNE. February 10. THE FORTHCOMING V R.C. AUTUMtf
MEETING
The entries for the general events at th» V.R.C. autumn reunion at Flemington closed last Tuesday, and the responses to the club'« manifesto were extremely gratifying, seeing that they totalled 550, as against 543 last year, 463 in 1906, ajid 498 in 1905. Poseidon does not figure" among the entrants; but amongst those entered for the different w.t*. events may be enumerated — Antonio, Apologue, Boaran, Collarit, Duke of Clarence, Ebullition, Istria, Lady Diffidence, Master Foote, Melodrama, Mountain King, Munjeet, North Head, Peru, Putty, Seddon, Step Out,
4krtan, Thackeray, Traquair, Tulkeroo, and "Welcome Trist. Fourteen suivived first acceptances for tne " Sellinger," but it ib next door to a certainty that some of these were left in through oversight. Last year there were only three starters in the St. Leger, and at present it certainly appears as if nothing outside, say, Duke of Claience. Lady Kylstone, Peru, Seddon, and Welcome Inst ■would be likely to oppose the devastating Mountain King However, as 14 still constitutes the main, here they are for the delectation of readers of the Witness. — J. A. Kenmura's b c Bettana (Positano—Mascar*) ; C. L. Macdonald's br f Lady Rylstone (Gr*fton— Lady Tienton) , P. A. Connolly and E. W. Hocking s blk c Corzil (Orzil — Gmfin); J. C. Roberts's eh c Spycraft (Gossoon — Opera Glass); K. S. MacLeod's b c Seddon (Soult— Rose and White); H. Power's b f Lady Diffidence (Grafton— Diffidence) ; J. Walsh's b c Romanoff (Little Bernie— Czarina); W. E. White's b c Welcome Tnst (Sir Tristram — Welcome Queenie) ; A •"Wynne's br c Peru (Grafton — Silvercoin) ; A. Wynne's br c Sivori (Grafton — 'Cello) , J. Mac Donald's eh c Mountain King (Wallace — Bonnie Rosette) ; J. Beith's b c Montcalm (Siege Gun — Mea) ; Mrs F. A. Joseph's br c Siege Moi (Siege Gun — Peusez-a-moi) ; W. T. Nowlan's br g Duke of Clarence (Grafton — Queen Agnes). The mile and a-half wf a. event on the opening day of the meeting (Saturday, 29fch inst.) has attracted eight, and if Apologue, Booran, Lady Diffidence, Pius, Seddon, Tar•tan, Thmckeray, and Tulkeroo try conclusions therefor, the Essendon Stakes, with its 550sovs added money, should be worth ■witnessing. A goodly field of 19 (Antonio, Collarit, Decollette, Demolition. Ebullition, Istria, Knox, Master Foote, Melodrama, Montagu, Mountain King, Munjee-t, North Head, Scotland, Seddon. Step Out, Thackeray, Traquaii, and Welcome Trist) have been nominated for the mile weight-for-ege dash yclept the All-aged Stakes on the third day; and the same afternoon the elect from Apologue, Booran, Duke of Clarence. Lady Diffidence, ■Mountain King, Peru, Pius, Putty, Seddon, Tartan, and Thackeray will measure strides over two miles ot ground under set weight conditions in the Loch Plate. Munjeet, Dusky Morn (whose handsome appeal ance has been commented upon by ell racing folk;, Ringlet, Grenadier, Captain Shannon, and Pink Un aie amongst the four-and-sixty nominations for the Bourke Handicap, a seven-furlong event " round the curve " which always attracts a number of Newmarket Handicap contestants who ha\e foiled to hold their own up the bee-line ol Flemington straight. The two-year-old events have filled well. and as a number of the acknowledged topsawyers amongst the saplings will only congest m the classic two-year-old races their defection in the handicap, shou'd Tesult in JaTge fields and inspirifcirg competitions. TURF TOPICS. UnJe. R. O'Connor's fostering care Scotland has bsen scratching heath very merrily at Caulfiekl — very merrily indeed. .He is already regarded as having a good chance far Ihe Newmarket Handicap honours. Albeit scratched for all her VR.C. autumn engagements. Mr A. M'Cracken's Bagot Hantticap winner Mira hag recoveicd fiom hei lecent indisposition, which threatened to keep iher »way fiom the training track for some months. v By the way, Mr Alec M'Cracken's private 'trainer, Willie Filgate, seems to have got ihold of a pretty fair sort of a neddy in the Bobadil — Alice four-year-old gelding Akim 3?oo. Only credited with being " a speedy equib," he created a mild surprise fey annexing the Sandown Park Handicap, of a mile and a-quarter, at Sandown Park last Saturday, cariyii;g 7.5, and putting down a very iair field (including Rivanche 7.3, Boidol 7 9. *nd Fiery Star 7.9) in the easiest of fashions hy four lengths in 212. He followed this exploit up on Wednesday, on the same convincing ground — Sandown Park — at the Vicitorian Club meeting, by lunning the rule over the favourite Corroboree 10.1. Sweetness 7.18, Bandmaster 7.9, and Medallist 7.3, in the Victorian Club Handicap, of one mile, in 1.45 J. Akim Foo is in the Newmarket Handicap at the minimum, weight — 6.7; but in making his apportionments for the SaiisTbury Welter— of one mile, mark you! — at Caulfield nex< Saturday, the V.A.T.C. handicapper has, in a field of 39, uplifted him to 3.7, or only 131b below the top weight! J. Scobie's team at Flemington include* — Alawe, Bengalee, Boboli, Cleis. Curtain Lecture, Jack Smith, Kuban, Marco Polo, Mother Goose, Sardou. Tortive, and Wai-ila. The MarTbymong Plate victress Mother Goo=e (Wallace— Morisca) has filled out splendidly since the spring, and is now as nice a filly as one cotzl<3 T-ist fo clap ere^ on Curtain Lecture has been indulging i? long, strong work. On Tuesday morning Tom Payten's little lot "■ deployed into the training arena _at Jieadquarters. " Seven is the main " with Payten this season, as follows- Banzai, Peru Melodrama. Sivori, and the two-year-oidi ■Adriatic (Haut Brion— Trieste), Five Cronus (Grafton — Applcwoman). and Scotch Airs «Ayr Laddie— Highland Mary). They all looked remarkably bright. On Tuesday morning, at Caulfield. Istria skimmed over half a mile very pleasingly in 52sec; but her stable companion Scotland clipped a second and a-half off that tally •without any apparent effort. All Walter S. Hickenbotham's charges are soir.g well at Flemington. and the manner in which Apologue- scuds along the concluding half-mile of lengthened striding gallops proves to demonstration that the Melbourne Clip hero is at present in great heait.
