M., Wliangarei.— Dinornis replies: Your - photo, is interesting, and so are the notes that accompany it; but, after all. there is nothing extraordinary in fossiliferous limestone rocks occurring 500 ft above sea-level. Limestone in one form or anoth-er abounds throughout the earth, and while it has all been formed in water, some of it. no doubt, at great sea depths, much of the known strata is a long way above sea-'.evel now. The top of Mont Blauc, for instance, is limestone, and the cliffs of Dover chalk. The bottom, of the Atlantic is covered with a foraminiferal oose winch appears to be literally chalk — that is. limestone — in the making. There ip gres>t variety in limestone strota, and while some of h-as been laid down in estuaries, etc., there i» reason to believe that a great deal of it lias formed the bottoms of deep seas. The Cretaceous System, to x which many of these rocks belong, is represented in South America by strata rising from 10.000 ft to 20 000 ft above sea-level. If you lay this line I would be obliged to you if you wouia let me know the exact amount that you do get; but 1 believe that the above will not be frr out Take great care in jointing pipes not to get etuff in. as the pressure is insufficient to drive s«me out unless it is loose.
