Tlie Welt Boot was invented with the idea of making* as fine a boot as. could be made. No idea of cheapness entered into the calculations Of the man who invented the welt system of putting a boot together, for sampler and cheaper ways of doing: the thing- are too apparent. The fundamental idea of the welt boot is to have the outsole attached to the boot by means of sewing it to a welt which projects around the edge of the boot where the upper and sole join. This was done to do away with all roughness inside the boot. The insole was channelled on the side away from the foot, and on the lip of the channel was sewed the upper and the welt, the insole at the time of this operation, of course, being - Inside the boot. Naturally, the junction of the welt, the lip of the channel in the insole, and the upper, made a ridge which extended around the. \ boot. Inside this ridge is a flat surfaoe a fraction of an inch lower than the ridge around the edge of the boot. This is taken advantage of by filling it with cork or other substance to prevent the boot from squeaking and to keep out moisture. Manifestly tkis is a better way to make a boot than to simply tuck the upper between the two soles, the outer and inner, and sew or nail or peg them together. Long experience has proved that this welt plan of building a boot is better in practice as well as theory. Even the past five years has seen a •~ large increase in the use of -welt boots, for in that time they liave been made cheaper than ever before, and people who did not know the comfort of a welt boot were thus initiated, and will always want welt boots hereafter. The man or woman who has worn one good pair of welt boots will not want to go back to any other kind— at least, not if he understands that the advantages obtained were due to the welt construction.
