Monday Evening.
A pietty wedding took place at St. Peter's, Caversham, last Wednesday afternoon, when Miss Edith Constance Ewing. eldest daughter Mr R. Ewing. St. Ciair. was niarned to Mr E. L Macassey, second son of the late Mir James Macassey, barrister-at-liw, and Mrs Macassey, George street. The service, which was fully choial, was conducted by Canon King, assisted' by Rev Mr Bedford. The bride, who was given away by her father, looked charming in a gown of soft Liberty s«tin, trimmed with chiffon roses and yoke of Limerick lace. She wore a wreath, of orange blossoms, arranged with a veil of Limerick lace, and carried a lovely shower bouquet The bridesmaids — Miss Fredia Ewing, Miss May Ewing, and Miss Brenda Bell — were prettily dressed in ivory silk voile, with sleeves and vest of lace and net. Their hats were of brown =traw, trimmed with pink roses and blown Uille, and then bouquets were pink ro^es, maidenhair, and brown leaves finished with biown tuPe streamers. Mr R. Macdonald. Oamaru acted as best n-an, and Mr Eliston Orbell and Mr A. Maclean were groomsmen. After the ceieraony, Mr and Mrs Ewmg held a reception at St. Clair. Mr Stilling proposed the toast of the day. A large marquee was elected for the refreshments, the tables being prettily decorated with ivy geraniums in twe shades of pink,, with grass and asparagus fern The wedding cake had a small table to itself, the flowers being white sweet peas, carnations; and maidenhair. Later in the day Mr and Mrs E. L. Macassey left for the Lakes, the bride travelling in an Eton costume of blue serare, with hat and belt of cornflower, white blouse, scarf, and gloves.

On Friday afternoon Mrs Butterworth gave a farewell tea in honour of Mrs Ritchie who leaves for England this week. The day being lonely, the guests enjoyed the stroll in the garden among the trees. Tea was served m the dming-room. the table being- prettily anarged with carnations. Among -those present were.— Mrs T. Turnbull, Mrs Morris, Mrs Edmond, Mrs J. Mrs Sise gave a ladies' luncheon at her 'house in Queen street on Friday last.
On Saturday evenirg Mis Blomfield gave a biidge party as a farewell to Mr and Mis Barclay, who leave for Sydney nsort month. There were five tables, and the highest scores weie made by Miss Salmond and Mrs Barclay Mr Jones and Mr Ziele. Supper was seiv'ed in the dming-room, the table being prettily decorated with pink sweet peas. Among those piesent were Dr and Mrs Eiley. Mr and Mrs Barclaj, Dr and Miss M'Kellar, Miss Mleares (Christchurch), Misses Salmond, Miss Sinclair. Miss F-eigus, Miss Shand, Miss Macassey, Miss Kamsay, Messrs Duthie, Reading, Jones, Ziele, Berstem, and Dr Newlands. Mrs and Miss Bell (Shag Valley) came into town to be present at Miss Ewmg's wedding. Mrs Bell is staying .with Mrs A. Fenwick, and Miss Bell is the guest of Mrs R. E-wing. Mrs D. M'Laren (Timaru) was in town for a few days. The Misses Wiay (TimariO spent a short holiday in Dunedin, and weie staying at Leith House Miss de Lautour has gone to visit Miss Deans, Christchurch. Miss Meares (Christchurch is staying at Leith House. Mr and Mrs Rsid (Elderslie) axe in town for a. few days. Mr and Mrs J. Reid are also in Dunedin. The engagement is announced of Miss Agnes Todd, daughter of the' late Rev. Mr Todd. ot Oamaru, to Mr J-. Rutherford, of the Bank oi New South Wales, Dunedin. The Clara Butt concerts are being thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. Quite a number of people have come to town to hear the talented husband and wife. OAMARU, February 10. Our new baths are now in full swing, and are being well patronised. The opening ceremony was performed by Mr R. Milhgan, but, unfortunately, the weather was vexy wet. Besides the men's swimming club, which up to date has upwards of 130 members, a ladies' club has been formed, the object of both institutions^being to help and instruct non-swimmers. The new vicar of St. Luke's, the Rev. Mr Barclay, of Wellington, will take up his duties about the 18th. The new magistrate, Mr Hutchison, has arrived from New Plymouth, and has purchased the vicarage, in Hull street, 'and will reside there. Miss Cunninghame has returned to Timaru. Mrs Douglas and family have returned from Hampden. Mr and Mrs Earle have returned from. Dunedin. We- are very sorry that Mme. Clara. Butt cannot give a conceit heare. To hear such a singer is an education and a privilege.
CHRISTCHURCH, February 8. Clara Butt's final concert on Mouday night •was a tremendous success. The great singer ■was greeted with rounds of applause on the occasion of her appearances. She wore a lovely gown of vieux rose eatin, made en princess, and come lovely diamonds. Mrs and Miss Pitman have leturncd from South Canterbury. Mrs Ronalds has gone to Dunedin. Mr and Mis Dawes (England) left for Wellington this week. Professor and Mis Cook have returned from England. Mrs Harold Johnston (Wellington) is staying with Mrs Stead. On Wednesday last Mrs S"tead gave a most enjoyable afternoon tea, when a number of games were indulged in. A putting competition was won by Mrs Michael Campbell. Mrs Kettle being second, whilst otheis played croquet 'and tennis. Amongst those present were Mrs and the Misses Bettington (Sydney), Miss Sise (Dunedin), Mrs H. Wood. Mrs Beals, Mrs and the Misses Kettle. Mrs P. Campbell, Mrs H. Johnston (Wellington), Mrs and Miss Wilding. Mrs and the Misses Burns, Miss Bell (Wellington), Mrs J. Palmer.
The one topic of conversation here now is the awful Are which broke out on Friday night. It is said to have done more damage than any previous fire in New Zealand. The ruins are too awful. The D.1.C.. one of our best shops, was swept clean, not a thing of any sort saved. Freeman's tea-rooms also and twelve other business places were absolutely swept away. The crowd watching the fire was enormous, most people staying till 3 in the morning. Miss Bell (Wellington) is the guest of Mrs P. Campbell. Thursday was the first day of the C.J.C. Summer Meeting. It was a fine though windy day, btut very few people were present. Mrs Pyne wore a becoming gown of cream net with toxiches of mauve, large black-and-white hat; Mrs A. Rhodes white cloth, large white-and-black 'hat; Mrs Stead black-and-white striped taffetas, white hat with peacock-blue feathers ; Mrs- H. Johnscon (Wellington) white voile over silk, black-and-white hat ; Mrs Boyle white serge, black-and-white hat; Mrs A. Williams pale blue cloth, black hat; Miss Boyle vieux rose frieze, bat to match ; Mrs Pitmtm white lace and ninon, floral toque-; Miss Pitman white ninon, rose-pink hat; Mrs Kettle pale blue mousseline, floral hat; Miss Kettle cream, floral hat ; Miss C. The second and last day, Saturday, was a glorious day. and a few more people turned out. Mrs Pyne wore floral chiffon, large black hat ; Mrs Boyle lavender taffetas, black-and-white hat; Mrs A. Wi";anis white cloth, white ha-t ; Miss Boyle pink-ahd-white striped muslin, floral hat; Mrs A. E. G. Rhodes white chiffon with ecru lace, pink hat; Mrs P. Campbell black lace over silk, black hat; Mrs Stead navy blue and green voile, hat to match; Mts H. Johnston white voile, blue hat. Others present were: — Mrs G. WELLINGTON, February 8. On Wednesday last llrs Martindale Kendall gave a delightful afternoon tea at her home in Boulcott street. The drawing room was prettily decorated with flowers. Some of those present wera:— Drs Gunn and Bennett, Mesdames Hislop, M'Kenzie, Gibbs, Young, Elliott, and Holgate, Misses Lusac, Simms. Palmer, Tewsley, and Dunlop. On Thursday last, at Otaki. Mis 3 Jessie Auld, eldest daughter of Mr Thomas Auld, was married to Mi Arthur Hall, of Wellington. The biide was attended by her sister, M.iss Euphemia. Auld, and Miss Ctea Smith. Mr Hall, brother of the bridegroom, actad as best man. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. P. R. Parns.
The engagement is announced of Miss Baird, of Masteiton, to Mr Norrcnn Moore. Miss Williams (Napier) has been visiting friends in Wellingion. Miss Butts, who ha 3 been staying in BLawke's Bay, has returned to town. Miss Nswman (Eangitikei), who has been in Wellington for a few days, has- returned: to her country home. Mrs R. W. Shallcrass (Wellington) is visiting her mother in Westport. Miss Lloyd-Hassell, who has bsen visiting friends in Timaru, returned to We'lmgton last Wednesday . Miss Munro (New Plymouth) is the guest of Miss Turner, Kelburne. Miss A. M. Atkinson, who has been staying with Miss R'chmond, Hobson street, left for Nelson last Monday. The Misses O. and G. Mills have returned from an .enjoyable visit to Marlborough. Miss Earle Bremner is visiting Mrs Menzies, of Thoxndon Quay. Last Friday Mrs Salmon gave c morning tea at Kelburne for the ladies of the University Senate. Mrs and Miss Homer <Patea) are at present on a short visit to Wellington. Mrs Preece (Palmerston North) has been staying in Auckland, en route for Melbourne, where she will stop some time
