A GAME AT DRAUGHTS.
We had a game at draughts one night, ' She and I. She and I! • The place was draughty, too, at sight, The storm winds nigh. The storm winds nigh! 'Twas in a, " shanty " on the plains, We played at draughts to ease our pains; We were benighted, far from trains, She and I. She and I! The game progresed by fits and starts, She'd one king, She'd one king! I wished the game were chess, my heart • Pulsation played such wretched parts, Tho' I could sing, Tho' I could sing I had a queen, but not in chess, I felt half faint, I must -confess, For, ah! her mi<id I could not guess The winds a-wing, The winds a-wing! The planter snored • away like mad, \ Snored away — Snored away — His welcome, though, had made us glad That sorry day, That sorry day — When, lo! oxir "cart" had broken down, Miles, miles from Inchenbuckten town, And here was she with but one gown At draughts at play! - • • • • » We play a game at chess to-night, Chess to-night ; The room is snug, though, wind-proof quit*, Wind-proof quite; But, ah! the heat is so intense, I almost wish that I were hence — But, no, I don't — on no pretence — She's dressed in white! " Your move, dear ; " DEAR ! how strange it sounds, How strange it sounds! But, ah! she smiles a hapy smile, On happy grounds! "Queen, dear!" I whisper, then I feel As though chess had no scope for zeal, And then an arm around I steal — Slim, whitey bounds ! " Check-mated" Well, I do not mind, I do not mind; I've given the game to her, you see, Quite, quite resigned, Quite, quite resigned', For, ah! another game we'll play To-morrow — 'tis our wedding day; She laughs a ringing laugh — she may — Love's blind, love's blind!
