CHESS ITEMS.

On August 7 last, Mr R. J. Barnes, of Wellington, contributed to this column a sui-mate problem in six moves, the composition being the outcome of a strenuous endeavour on his part to solve a particularly difficult sui-mate problem of a similar number of moves, composed by Mr F. Baird, of Manchester, and published m the Otago Witness of July Vh, 1907. Mr Barnes s problem has since been reproduced in the Falkirk Herald, and has been very favourably commented upon by solvers at Home Mr Baird himself remarks in the Herald that while he is of opinion that Mr Barnes's composition is not so difficult as his, and is, indeed, totally different, yet "it is very pretty, and a little beauty" Another solver calls 'it "a stunner"; a third says. "It may not be so difficult as Mr Baird's, but I found it quite hard enough for my taste", while yet a fourth avows : " Not very easy, but Baird's was an appalling study. Like Mr Barnes. I spent hours over it in rain." Altogether, Mr Barnes has every reason to feel gratified at the cordial reception accorded to his problem, and the encouragement thus given will, it is hoped, incite him to further effort in the direction of problemcomposing.
