GAMES
The following game was recently contested at the Franklin Chess Club, Philadelphia, Dr Emanuel Lasker, chess champion of the world, having the Black nien, and being opposed by past and present champions of the club (Mesrs Mordecai Morgan and E. C. Studelmann), who consulted about their moves. The score is from the New Orleans Times-Demociat. —
Notes by Dr Emanuel Lasker. (a) An old variation that has the merit of keeping the full material of the pieces on the board for a long time. (b) If 16 ... P-K R 3; then 17 B x P; and if 17 . . . P x B ; 18 P x B , threatening to win the rook by 19 P x P check. (c) The best was to defend the Q P. (d) If 20 B x Xt (B 5), the recapturing pawn would have seriously embarrased the advance of the Xt P. (c) Deciding to allow the Q Xt to obtain a commanding position, with a counterbalancing advantage in the mobility of the bishops and tho weakness of -the White Q P. (p) The White pawns must now fall. (g) Apparently Black is now obliged to play 30 ... B-R 7, the continuation intended by White being 31 R-Q B 1. If then 31 ... B-Q 3; 32 Q x P, B-R G; 33 RB 6; and White wins. Black, however, has an effective reply that does not lie on the surface (v) It 31' R x B; then 31 , . , B s P, etc. (i) Now Black seems to be lost. Not only is Kt-K 7 eh threatened, but also Kt-K 1, to dislodge the rook, and guard the White king against rook checks. (j) The resource that turns the tables on White. (k) Black escapes with the loss of the exchange, coupled' with the gain of another pawn. (T.) If 35 Q x P, then 35 . . . BxR P , 36 Q-R 8 check, R-Q 1; 37 R-Kt 8, Q-R 7; and Black wins. (m) White would not have gained anything by 36 Kt-K 7 check. (n) Now Black mates in six. Game played in an interclub match bstweeu M. Kaizer, of Liverpool (White), and G. Mills-Palmer, of Manchester (Black) White, in scheming to win two pieces for a rook, himself falls into a pretty trap: —
