THE ESCAPED PRISONER.
A GOOD SAMARITAN. TSEW PLYMOUTH, February 10. In the Magistrate's Court .to-day Joseph Thompson, charged with' escaping* from New Plymouth Gaol, pleaded guilty. The Magistrate said under ordinary circumftances, as Thompson had broken gaol on a former occasion, be would inflict a heavy penalty, hut ■ on account of the peculiar circumstances would only sentence him to the loss of three months' marks. Whilst Seeing from pursuit Thompson found a Maori lying wounded from a fall from a florae, and took the risk of goin;r io a tore and {jiving information. The Maori led, and at tho inquest the jury commended the action of Thompson. Sharks have been plentiful of late near thft Zig-zag Beach, Taranaki, and during the past week a. number of Maoris have fucceeded in catching no fewer than 30, til of different sizes.
