LAKE COUNTY.
February 8. — The weather continues very hot and dry. Rain is badly wanted.
Tourists. — About 120 week-enders airived in Queenstown on Satuiday evening last. A good number of these availed themselves of the trip to the Head of the Lake on Monday. Scholastic. — In addition to the names first published, the names of Misses L. Youngman and L. Romans, of Arrowtown. appeared in Friday's Daily Times as having been successful in the recent civil service examinations.
Tennis Match.— On Saturday last a match ■was played .at Queenstown between teams from •the Queenstown and Arrow Ciubs. The visiting players were most hospitably treated by the Queenstown Club and fuends. The match was very evenly contested and resulted in a win for Quenstown by five games, the scores being : Queenstown, 74 ; Arrow, 69. Regatta. — A meeting was held in Queenstown on Monday evening last for the purpose of discussing the question of holding- a regatta in Queenstov.-n. Those present considered that there would be no difficulty in raising sufficient fund 3in Queenstown to carry out a regatta. It was decided to approach the Railway and Tourist Departments with regard to obtaining concessions and other facilities. A public meeting is to be-held in a. fortnight's time to deal with the question. Messrs Denniston and J. C. M'Bride were appointed joint secretaries, to make inquiries as to what crews would be likely to take part, an dto- obtain information "Sgflrding the conduct of regattas. Magistrate's Court —At the last sitting of the court at Quenstown two informations were laid by the Stock Inspector against persons for failing to keep down rabbits. In the oase against T Mmr, of Coronet Peak Station, a fLr><i of £5, with costs (£1 13s), was inflicted and in the case against P B. Boult, of Head of Lake, a fine of ss, without costs, was recorded.
Deaths.— Sister M Philip, of the Queenstown Dominican Convent, died at the convent on Tuesday morning last. She had suffered from consumption for the past Ihree years. The deceased lady was a native of Invercargill. and was highV accomp'iahed. She bore her sickne=s with heroic natience The funeral took pla-e at Queens-town en Tuesday afternoon A large number of visiting priests were pie=ent A very cd resident of Queenstown, m the person of Mr Green, passed away on Thursday Deceased leaves a grown-up family, He was highly respected by those who knfw him.
Mining. — It is aeam rumoured that Farrell's quartz reefs at Ma-etown has been floated into a company at Home. Additional men have been put ot dining +hp r>a=t week, and there are new 10 men employed Miners' Association.— The monthly meeting was held m Arrowtown on Saturday evening last. Mr E. Hayes, of Cardrona. made application for a subsidy on £70 for developing a claim, at Cardrona.. It was decided to recommend the application for the favourable consideration of the Mires Dermt-^nt The annual m-esting of the association is\o be held on Saturday evening next.
