At the annual meeting of the Wellington Gas Company the chairman said the past year' was the very best in the company's •history. The profits exceeded those of the past year by £7609. But for the pdor quality of a good deal of the coal ,supplied the result would have been fully £2500 better. In view of an increased expenditure on new works, there is to be no reduction in the price of gas. Joseph Daly, alias James Dale, pleaded "Guilty" to obtaining various sums of money from clergymen by false pretences. Accused had called on the clergymen and obtained money by telling stories of a sister who was needing help and guidance. It seemed that the accused was subject to fits, and was perhaps not thoroughly responsible for his actions. He was remanded for sentence. The Benevolent Trustees discussed the question of husbands deserting their wives and clearing out of the Dominion. Two instances wore mentioned at the last meeting, and the Trustees decided to guarantee the police <txponses of bringing back these errant husbands. The opinion was expressed that deserting husbands should be followed wherever they went and- brought back, as an example to others who thought of doing likewise. Sixty Wellington shopkeepers have notified the Labour Department of their intention to observe the weekly half-holiday on Saturday An interesting addition was made to the Asiatic alien population to-day, when a little Chinese girl arrived from Sydney in charge of a lady missionary who is visiting New Zealand on furlough. The girl was saved from a violent death by the missionary, who has kept her ever since, and intends training her as a lady doctor for work among her own women in China. She is not remaining in New Zealand, but; an undertaking has been entered into to pay the poll tax of £100 should ehe dto leave the Dominion. As a matter of fact, the girl will accompany her guardian when she returns to the East. ' " Frederick Wheeler Rodney, who recently attempted to commit suicide with a razor, was on the 7th convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called on. He was also ordered to pay 20, half the costs '"itTs understood that neerotiatione for the resumption of the lea Estate, the property of the late Rev. J. C. Andrew for close settlement will j?e initiated by the Government. '
