TYPHOID FEVER.
(Fxom Oub Own Correspondent.) AUCKLAND, January 27. The number of cases of t\phoid or enteric fever in Auckland has been increased 3by the addition of a case from the Eden Terrace district. During the past two aronths three • cases have occurred in this district, whilst during the same period five cases have been reported from the Mount Eden Borough. The experience of these districts and such other districts as Newmarket, with their incomplete drainage systems, when contrasted with the immunity of boroughs provided with an efficient drainage scheme, form (says the Herald) one of the strongest possible arguments in favour of the carrying out of a comprehensive drainage scheme, such as is mow being promoted by the City Council. Apart from drainage, there are the almost equally important questions of scavenging, •refuse removal and its destruction, a. pure anilk supply, housing of the working people, the control of infectious diseases by the adoption of steam disinfection so strenuously advocated by the energetic District Health Officer, and the many other problems which oan only be sat'sfactorilv solved by treating them on a broad basis under a body with wider powers of administrative Inspector Grieve, of the Health Department, has just visited Herekino and Kerikeri, in the north of Auckland, in connection with reported outbreaks of enteric in those districts. He reports that at Herekino there were only two cases, one of which proved fatal. At Kerikeri the outbreak was confined to the members of one household and two visitors to the ihouse. The head of the family, who was removed to Auckland before the case was diagnosed as enteric, died here. The other patients consist of his daughters and two visitors. Mr Grieve, on arriving at the house, found that the local inspector had taken prompt steps to minimise the spread of the disease.
