MELBOURNE, February 6. | Hides are very firm. The catalogues were cleared in sellers' favour. Messrs Donald Eeid and Co (Ltd ) report as follows. — We held a sale of hides in our stoics on Thursday Owing to our last sale being held on Jaiuiary 30 our catalogue on this occasion was not a large one, but the hides on offer were in good sound condition, and met with brisk competition. Puces, however, show no alteration from those ruling a week ago. We made a satisfactory clearance of the whole catalogue at the following values — Stout heavy ox, Gd to I'A ; heavy do, 5Jd to old , medium do. 4}d to 5d , light do, 3\d to 4Jd ; heavy cow. 4£d to 4^d , light do. 3d to 4Jd ; inferior, 2d to 2Jd ; yeailmgs, Bid to s£d: calfskins. 3d to 5Jd per lb. Wright, Stephenson, and Co. (Ltd ) leport as follows- — We he'd our fortnightly sa'e in our Maclaggan street stores on Thursday, when we offered a catalogue of 588 hides to a lepresentative attendance of buyeis.We are pleased to be in a position to report j •that prices, more especially for prime hides, j showed a marked improvement qu values ruling during the past three months, and our entire catalogue was cleared under the hammer at satisfactory figures. We estimate the advance at from id per lb on light sorts, and medium-conditioned hides of every description to gd per lb on medium and heavy-weights of good substance and condition. Messrs Stionach, Morris, and Co (Ltd.) report as follows —We held our usual hide sale at our stores, Crawford street, on Thursday, when we submitted a catalogue totalling 389 to an aveiage attendance of buyer 3. Competition for well-saved lines was good, and prices in most classes were higher than for some time past. Heavy ox sold well at late rates ; medium weights were higher by id to Jd per lb, and cow hides of all descriptions showed an advance of id. Our top price for ox hides was 7id, which we secured for one weighing 761b. We also sold: One, 711b, at 7Jd; two, 631b and 65"b, at 62d; two, 631b, at 6}d ; two, 621b, at 6gd ; three, 641b, at 6Jd; and 13, 601b and 611b, at 6d- In medium weights we sold : Four, 581b at the very high price of 6d ; and also several lets to s^d. In cow hides our top price was 4Jd, paid for both heavy and medium weights; light hides selling at 4Jd.
