'Fhoh Our Own Correspondent.) OAMARU, February 7. The ballot for the 43 sections available for allotment on Otckaike Settlement took place this afternoon in the Courthouse. There was a very large gathering of applicants, who watched the proceedings with the attention bern of personal interest. Messrs Barron (Chief Commissioner), Livingstone, Dallas, and Tough (members r.f the Land Board) were presfnt. Owino; ro the new regulations, which make il necessary for successful applicants to at onco deposit the amount of the rent for the brokpn period March 9 to June 20, the proceedings were somewhat protracted. In one or two cases absent applicants had neglected to arrange for this payment, and friends had to come forward to save their sections for them. Those sections whioh were unapplied for were opened for selection during the afternoon, with the result that four of them were tak^n up, leaving five still unapplied for. These sections — 11. 13, 19, 21, and 22— will be open for selection at Dunedin. It will be seen that of the 39 sections allotted in the morning at the first ballot, 24- went to applicants from Canterbury and 12 to residents of North Otago.
