GOVERNMENT CANDIDATE DEFEATED. LONDON, February 1. (Received Feb. 2, at 4.46 p.m.) The vacancy created in South Herefordshire by the death of Colonel Gardner (Liberal) has been filled by the election of Captain Clive. The voting was as. follows: — Capt. Clive (Unionist) ... 4946 Mr Thomson (Liberal) . . 3928 Captain Clive was a candidate for the seat at the last general election, when he was defeated by 312 votes, the voting being:—Colonel Gardner, 4497 votes; Captain Clive, 4185.
