NEW SUBMARINE CABLE.
WELLINGTON, January 29. The Government has sent to England for a new submarine cable, which will be kept in stock, to be ready for laying if necessuv suddenly arisc3. The cost of the cable is about £8000. Its pui chase is necos-sary because the existing- stock is required for the proposed cables between Elms-ville Bay and D'Urvillo Inland, thence to Stephen Island ; and another connecting Central Island with the mainland, near Riverton. The Prime Minister attaches great importance to the laying of these short and comparatively inexpensive cables, as they will enable passing shipping to keep in touch with the mainland, movements being reported and masters informed of weather conditions to be expected 1 .
Three £5 notes were discovered in an old copy of a Bible bought at a bookstall for 6d by Mr Arthur Harris, of South Shields. Maggie Paipakura, the Whakarewarewa guide, is displaying with pride a post-card which has come to her from the West Indies, 6imply addressed "Maggie, New Zealand.'!
