The weather was warm, though fine for the opening day of the Pahiatua Racing Club's annual fixture to-day. Notwithstanding the recent spell of dry weather the course was in good order, »nd some exciting finishes were -witnessed. There were 16 bookmakers inside and 10 outside, and they all did a good business in most of the races, laying bigger prices than the- totalizator. Ttare -wae one case of welshing. Second Day— Thursday, January 30.
There was splendid weather for the second] day of the Pahiatua Racing Club's summer meeting. Rain fell during the morning 1 , and the going was much improved. The amount put through the totalisator for the day was £6085, as against £5556 for the corresponding day last year, and the total for the meeting was £12,806, as against £11,439 last year. The Racing Club will have a handsome profit on the meeting. The following axe the results :t HANDICAP HACK HURDLES. One mile and a-half. — Pantaloon, 11.13, 1; Mount Cook, 9.2, 2; Papatawa, 11.6, 3. All started. Won by half a length. Time, 2min 55 3-ssec. STEWARDS' HANDICAP. Six furlongs.— Golden Eagle, 6.7, 1; Gawain, 8.8. 2; Golden Gate, 7.6, 3. Scratched: Aboriginal, Silver Shell, and Scotch Reel. Won by a nose. Time lmin 15sec. __ NEWMARKET HACK HANDICAP. Five furlongs.— Axite, 8.9. 1; Seatondaile, 7.11, 2; Miss Vera, 8.7, 3. Won fairly eaeily. There was a good race for second place between Seatondale and Miss Vera. Time, lmin 3 3-ssec.
MAKURI HACK HANDICAP. Six furlongs. — Merrier Zealand, 9.0, 1; Bonnie Doon, 7.13, 2; Diplomatic, 7.0; 3. Won easily. Time, lmin 16 3-6 sec. • RACING CLUB HANDICAP.
