Asked as to the distribution of our produce at Home, Mr Johnstone said: — " The methods of distribution are pretty well known here, and I do not know that I have anything new to add in this connection. Each year sees the field of distribution widened, and the markets of Grea* Britain are bejne gradually developed. One disquieting feature in connection with the meat industry is the hold that the American Beef Trust has upon the . English markets. The Americans have now 44 stalls at Smithfield, and it is eaid that the trust absolutely controls the price of beef. They have now purchased come works in the Argentine Republic, and will have the handling of a considerable quantity of mutton and lamb as well as beef. It is to be hoped that this does not mean that the trust intends to capture the trade in these lines also. New Zealand must set her face strenuously against any attempt on the part of the trust to obtain control of her meat." THE AMERICAN CRISIS AND NEW
