UNIVERSITY DEGREES.

In 1904 the Senate of the University of New Zealand succeeded l in getting through the Legislature an.-act enabling it to' confer new degrees as' follow :_ — Doctor of Lawsv Master of Lawe,- Master "of Surgery, Master of Science, Bachelor, Master, and Docto* of — (a) Veterinary science, (b) detail surgery, (c_) engineerihg, mechanical, electrical, civil, ' mining, metallurgical, naval architecture, • (d) agriculture, (c) publio health, and (f) commerce. This, however, was too much for the authorities at Home, for at" its last sitting (ae 1 reported by the chancellor, Sir Robert 'Stout) the senate resolved to withdraw the petition that had* been presented to the Privy Council for the "recognition of these new degrees byj way of a supplementary charter. The question was referred to at the meet!» ing >of the" senate* this afternoonf when Dr M 'Do well. Dr Fitchett. and Mr George HogbeiT alluded *to .the difficulties* which had been encountered. The Chancellor declared that the troubl* really was that the"' matter' bf granting^* charter for the new degrees came befora men who were impressed with "old university ideas."
