FIRES.
MASTEB.TON, January 26.
One of the prettiest pieces of bush remainins at Mata-Kiwi, in tke •vieinitv of Masterton, was destroyed by fire on Saturday and Sunday. The residence .of Henry Holmes, at Matahiwi, narrowly escaped destruction. A Rang of men, including several members of the fir© brigade, kept the fire back. Fortunately the wind changed, otherwise the fire would have swept the Upper Plain block. GORE, January 25.
Three oat stacks belonging to P. M. Burke, at Otaraia, -were burnt yesterday. They were insured for £200 in the New Zealand office. There is suspicion that the fire was not accidental.
An unoccupied four-roomed house at Kaitangata, the property of Matthew Carson, was completely destroyed by fire at 11.15 p.m. on the 24th inst. It is assumed that the cause of the fire was the setting Alight pi some grass surrounding the building. The bouse-, which was un-~ insured, was an old one, and was demolished in « very short space of time. .
