SHIPWRECK RELIEF SOCIETY. '
The monthly meeting of the New Zealand Shipwreck Relief Society was held on the 14-th. Present: Messrs J. Loudon (Mayor, in the chair), W. A. Moore, F. O. • Bridgeman, W Belcher, E. G. -Allen, M.P., and J. F. Arnold, M.P. Apologies for ; absence, were received • from Messrs T. W. Whitson and C. W. Chamberlain. ' > Mr Chamberlain wrote- explaining that as he }iad retired from the position of Collector of Customs, which entitled him to be vice-chairman ex officio of the society, lie -was not "no-ro a. meWter. Chamberlain's services and" asking him to allow himself to be nominated to the Execu- . tive Committee. ~ ! It was also decided that the secretary . write to -Mr Chamberlain's successor asking him to accept the vacant position. ] The monthly balance sheet showed the ' receipts to be £103 0s lOd, expenditure.-, £35 . 13s,— balance £"67 9s lOd. The fixed deposit , stands at £1879. j Th© Secretary reported that the exhibition of the relics from the Dundonald wreck had realised £21 8s 6d in Duhedin and £9 2e lOd in Timaru, and that a further sum from an exhibition in ChristI church was held by Mr E. Waite, curator jof the Ohristchurch Museum.— Mr Belcher 1- stated that the survivors of the wreck had been unable so far to obtain their wages, and it w"as resolved that the cash in hand ' on "account of the exhibitions of the relics be divided in equal shares" among the men, j and, in the event of some, of the survivors '■ being unavailable, the. sums dv? to them to be held, in the- funds of the society, r 'Correspondence .'to - and from the , City Council' "in reference to, the investment of ■ the society' 6 funds was dealt with. ' ! It was resolved- tha€* the annual meeting be held on the 11th prox. • Captain Sydney C. Birch, who served over five years" in the ranks before getting his ' first" commission in the kt Duke of Cornwall's light Infantry (now at Woolwich) , has been selected 1 for the adjutancy of the • 2nd Volunteer Battalion, Northumbtrland Fusilierfl.
