' J The annual tournament of the New Zealand Bowling Association was opened on Monday morning in weather that could not have been improved upon from a .bowler's point of view. As the day advanced a strong wind sprung up, but most of the greens have been co protected by fences and hedges that no great discomfort " was experienced in tin© majority of oases. The tournament is being conducted by ■ the Dunedin Centre, which has the management and control, and that body is to be cpnI gratulated upon the very, complete arrangements made for carrying the tournament i out. Everything seemed to have been, thought of, and the result was that the first day's play went with remarkable smoothness. Play was yesterday confined to getting off the first four draws of ihe Rink tournament, in which -91 rinks participate — a record for the South Island ;" — and so well-timed had everything been'thab the final names for the day finished a few * minutes after 6 o'clock. - In most instances, if not in all, light, refreshments had, been ' provided for. the players, and any notable visitors, and the lady friends of the various olubs gave every - assistance^in this connection, --and -jveie most attentive -to all. During the afternoon the Right Hon. Sir ! J. G. Ward, - accompanied by the Hon. Dr Findlay, visited several" of .the greens, .bo-,-ginni.ig with St. Kildar, the selection -bernftmade owing to the - fact that it was 'on this green that tht -president of the association (Mr W. Waddell, of , Oamaru) was drawn to play. The Prime Minister and Dr Findlay were met by several of the officials at the St. Kilda Green and heartily welcomed. Mr J B. Dick, vice-president of the ss, Kilda Club, in welcoming the visitors, said it was the first time- a Prime Minister and an Attorney-general had visited their green, t and they naturally felt proud. Mr Burk (Mayor of the Borough of bt. Kilda) also spoke a few words v of welcome. , ...» Mr Waddell (president of the association)
was particularly felicitous in extending i welcome to Sir Joseph and t Dr FindTay, and .mentioned that -there wore 46 clubs in the island, containing' 3000 members. He nJso referred to the growing popularity of the game of bowls. Cheers were given for the Prime Minister, for the Hon. Dr Findlay, and for the Government. -The Eight Hon. Sir J. G. Ward said he_ desired to express his warmest appreciation of the kind way a welcome had been extended to him and his colleague upon* such a. happy' occasion. It had not been hie pleasure to indulge in 1 the delightful game .of bowls, but, he had not. been indifferent to it, because he-had rbeen-e life, member of a club for the' last 10 or 12 years, but 'the duties devolving upon him' had prevented him taking an active part in the game. >He wae glad to., hear it was ■ taking such a hold all over the Dominion, • and as to the expression of good will to- , wards the Government by' one <of the • speakers, he hoped they* would bowl in the ! right direction 12 months from . now — (laughter and applause) — and he promised . them in»-the interval he would -learn the game' himself.-.. They had one -member ofs - the "Government ".who - should - be. .winning. He was" at -;Roslyn, and if was ' not '. winning it ' was 1 out of consideration for hie,, electorate. — , fLaughter). Iny-his-. (the speaker's) .early days the game of bowls- was .looked' upon as rather x for the glad" to see that- the younger ' people -were tak- 5 -ing it up. The game brought -people to'-\ gether, and if was by comjngling- in thsfc - way and an interchange of -ideas that good feeling was * brought about. He hoped they would extend - their v tours far beyond Australia, -where -,/they had played the game successfully. "Ho hoped they would have ■a- turn at the Americans, and after that- wo^ild go over to the' Old Country.; It waß a great pleasure to, him and hia eolle*ague to be* -present, and he regretted he not accept the offer made by, the president .Jof the association to play - a game,, -but' he wanted to go to Rosiyn and see how Mr Millar^was getting on. He" expressed his. delight at being on the green, ana, hoped' ■to see some of thevmen timing their shots - and putting a little side on, which members - of the Government never did.— (Laughter.) „ . The. Hon. Dr Findlay said it was very., gratifying to be so . .welcomed. He had begun bowls "30 years ago, .when he played on, the Cumberland Green, near hi» father s .house? &nd as- soon "as he had the -chance he intended "to return to it,* because," as Walton' said of angling, {'G<M might have made a better game .than bowls, ,but it was certain fre never did."' If they met & man 'who" played bowls they 'would know he was a virtuous man and a good-tem-pered men, and— probably drank whiskyj— - (Laughter.) - " . . . . , ". , , ' A photograph of the visitors .and.^ bowl- , era was then taken 'end play- was re- ' The* following are" the' results- of- the 'day's play: — , ■ v CHAMPIOJT RINK TOURNAMENT. MacDougall (Christchurch) is in a similar position in Section B, and the chances oxe> that the play-off for winner of the Green Island - Green will be between these two teams. A good deal of interest centred round the game between MacDougall and Rutherford, for if Rutherford had won, three teams would have tied at the completion of the fourth head. MaoDougalFa win, however, gave him a decisive lead, and the fifth game he has still to play i»" practically a. certainty for -him. Special mention should be made of -the excellent "condition of the green, for which great credit is due to, the care and attention bestowed on_ii by Mr James Taylor, the greenkeeper. Sir Joseph Ward paid a visit to the green during the -afternoon, and .there was a good sprinkling of spectators. The hospitality extended to the visitors by Mr W. Dawson (president of the' Otago Club) was quite exceptional, and bowlers sSd. visitors alike were of the opinion that they could not have been treated better.— Mr J. J. game full of interest. At the eleventh, head the score -vrscs 1O all. bat' Taieri serf in. 5 during the fourteenth heady and that head practically won the genre for them. In section B, second round, Kaituna (F. Smith) and Dunedin (W. ,H. . Smith), was an- excitj ing game. Both skips showed generalship ; and splendid play. The game was close'-y contested up to the finish, and Eaife^tia won a hard game by a narrow margin of two. Dunedin (W. H.' Smith) and St. Kilda (W. Taylor) was a game that was in doubt right up to the finish, being won on the last head. Kaituna (F. Smith) and- St. Hilda (W. Taylor) was an equally interesting game. The score stood 16 all in the last head. St. Kild-a then lay shot, and in the additional head F. Smith, with the last ball, drew the shot, and thus won the game. What was undoubtedly the most senj sational episode of the day occurred in 'tihe j fourth round of Section A. Taieri (A. I M'lreod) were two up, with one head to go, i and Dunedin (W. D*ll) law one shot. With his last ball he trailed the kitty ,„ making five, and thus securing 'a win "by three ; points. In * Carswell's (Taieri)^rink there was ,an excellent display, on the 'part of each member 'of the rink, the skip being acoarded splendid support from bis three men and securing wins in ell of the four rounds. In the last % head, when Carswell beat Allnutt by 19 to 12 in the fourth round, the Roslyn skip burnt the head twice, but Carswell was not" to be ' denied and secured a meritorious win in the end.
