AUCKLAND GAS EXPLOSION.

AUCKLAND, January 20. A. gas explosion occurred on the- Quay street jetty this morning 1 which, dislodged! • part' of- the foundations of , a small crane at the entrance to the wharf. An employee of the Gas Company went underneath th« Wharf, with a lighted match for the pur* po3e of examining the pij&s, but, luckily. was some distance away from what was the centre of the explosion, and sustained no injury^ There was a leak in one of tha -pipes, and sufficient gas~ had escaped to make an explosive mixture under the wharf. The explosion was accompanied by a loud: report?. Tha fire which followed "was ex-3 tinguished by the wharf section, of th^ p City Fire Brigade before it had done much damage to the wharf.
