(FeokvOur Own Correspondent.) •„.'-- •- LONDON, • December 6. ; ; The new twin-screw .steamer Kia-Oi-aj > builtjfor the- Shaw, Stfvill, and Albion Company, has just made her" first trip previous Kto beginning- ■ her maiden voyage to New "" Zealand. ' .She""- is , 464-ft long, with a gross ■ tonnage! of- '6560 tons, "and is specially'designed for the' 'trade'- between this country and New' Zealand. * .Three, of her five holds are specially insulated, and adapted for the reception of frozen . mutton. The fore-and-aft girder * principle has been adopted in the .construction of her. holds, which are practically free from obstruction, and can consequently receive articles of large ' dimensions. On the shelter-deck amidships is a deckhouse Njvhich provides a large arid, handsomely-furnished dining saloon, together with state* rooms for a number of first-class passengers. , The Kia-Ora had her first run from Bek fast to Cardiff to take in coals, ' and .both| the marine and engineer superintendents 'o£ the S.S.j and ~A.' Company report most fa<fc>urably of 'her performances in exceedingly dirty weather. She iwill load at -Liverpool;* and sail from that port on the 31st inst. Captain -ChaHley will be in command; ■that -captain -has recently re1 ceived- well-earned and^ rapid promotion in , recognition of the way in which he ' the Rangatira when she broke down on hfer voyage from Manila." MrFergusson will be in charge" of 'the engine room. ' The S.S h and" A.- Company, -have ordered a new, steamer, of .about 10,000 tons register. ! from Messrs Workman,' Clark, and Co., of Belfast, the builders of the, Kia-Ora and Matatua. The new boat will be called the Tainui, and she will be a bieger and improved edition of« the Arawa fitted foi about 50 first, 70 second, and a large num. ber of third-class passengers. She wilj have a sea speed 'of 13 knots, and refrigerating capacity for 100,000 carcases. She n to % be ready 'for sea- next November.
