The quarterly returns of attendance for I the period ended December 31, which have been compiled by the secretary of the Otago Education Board, show that there were 233 schools in operation in this district, employing 208 male and 319 female teachers, besides 24 teachers of needle,- ( work. The averages for the city -and suburban schools for the quarter were: Albany Street, 597; Forbuxy, 576; Caversham, 560; Kaikorai, 517; High Street, 488; Union Street, 486; George Street, 463; NorthEast Valley, 459; Arthur Street, 436; Marnington, 375; Maeandrew Road, 352 j Normal, 326; Green Island, 318; Maori Hill, 218; Musselburgh, 213; Kensington, 208; Ravensbourne, 149; Anderson's Bay, 130; St. Clair, 105; Wakari, 87; Leith Valley, 47. The averages at Oamaru were: North School, 299; South, 264; Middle, 226. At the distriot high eohoolsj Port Chalmers, 395; 'Balclutha, 291; Tokomairiro, 242; Mosgiel, 255; Lawrence, 234; Palmereton, 199; Tapanui, 176; Naseby, 132; Hampden, 89.
