The quarterly returns of attendance for I the period ended December 31, which have been compiled by the secretary of the Otago Education Board, show that there were 233 schools in operation in this district, employing 208 male and 319 female teachers, besides 24 teachers of needle,- ( work. The number of pupils on the rolls a*. the beginning of the quarter was 18,936.~ and at 4he end of the quarter 19,183, comprising 9870 boys and 9313 girls. The average attendance was 8789 boys and '8136 girls, making a total of 16,925, being 45 more than the total for the previous quarter, and 398 more than for the December quarter, 1906. The number of pupils admitted during the quarter wag 778 boys and 745 girls ; —total, 1523. The averages for the city -and suburban schools for the quarter were: Albany Street, 597; Forbuxy, 576; Caversham, 560; Kaikorai, 517; High Street, 488; Union Street, 486; George Street, 463; NorthEast Valley, 459; Arthur Street, 436; Marnington, 375; Maeandrew Road, 352 j Normal, 326; Green Island, 318; Maori Hill, 218; Musselburgh, 213; Kensington, 208; Ravensbourne, 149; Anderson's Bay, 130; St. Clair, 105; Wakari, 87; Leith Valley, 47. The averages at Oamaru were: North School, 299; South, 264; Middle, 226. At the distriot high eohoolsj Port Chalmers, 395; 'Balclutha, 291; Tokomairiro, 242; Mosgiel, 255; Lawrence, 234; Palmereton, 199; Tapanui, 176; Naseby, 132; Hampden, 89.
