WELLINGTON, January 24. Sir Joseph - Ward has sent the following cablegram to Sir Wilfrid Laurier with regard to the cabled statement that he had communicated with New Zealand regarding the Vancouver contract, but had received no reply : — " Sir Wilfrid Laurier, Prime Minister). Canada*. "Cable from Canada published in the press here that you stated you had communicated, with New Zealand Government upon renewal" of Canadian- Australian ' mail service, and that so far you had not received any reply. I assume there is eoxne mistake, a3 no communication has bsen. received from you, and New Zealand is no* a party to the contract." SIR WILFRID LAURIER'S REPLY. WELLINGTON. January 17. The reply received_ by the Prime M' 1 itef from Sir W. Laurier, Prime Minister of* Canada, "shows that the cablegram relating? to the alleged failure of . the New Zealand>Government to answer certain correspondence relating to the Vancouver mail con'traot had no foundation in fact. Sir Wilfrid, Laurier cabled as follows: " The statement was incorrect. All I said was that the contract for the renewal of the Canada-New Zealand-Australia servic< had been .prepared and signed here by th< Minister of Trade and Commerce, and sent to the contractor for signature, h*** **> h»*. not yet been received back."
