Distinctions su6h as these are not gained by staying at hepne. ' ' — Next week I hope to .report on fox 'terrier limportatic/ns, -which . have come to the hands , of Mr' Fred Bogaii 1 from -the best English kennels. —A- collie Club has been formed in ."Wales with headquarters at Cardiff. , ' — As many -of pur readers are -aware (says the' English Kennel Gazette) St. Hubert's Day if observed in many parts qf Belgium, especially Jr> Brussels, with a religious cere- * mony. „ On the first Sunday in November , -one of these -remarkable religious services was heia in the Church of Our Lady, 'at Brussells. Huntsmen, wearing 1 full hunter's costume, attended a special mass, bringing with them a large number of hounds, and the music for the service included a performance on' huntsmen's horns. The players were under the leadership of a French specialist in the art of winding a horn, who that day celebrated the twenty-fifth anniversary of his leadership. Ever since the institution of the special mass for St. Hubert's Day, huntsmen have been allowed to bring their hunting dogs to church with them, <md the function has become ouite an event, in hunting- circles. • — A humorous incident in connection with King Alfonso's shooting occurred at La Granja last autumn. His Majesty, in high spirits, laid several wagers with the ladies present, and it was noticed with great amusement that when the fair gamblers lost they never paid, while on the other hand they succeeded in winning 600 pesetas from the King. On reckoning up his losses the young monarch exclaimed, "Well, I have lost tojday, but please say nothing about this at 'home!" ' — Daring Exploit With Lions — Dogs to the Rescue. — According to the Advertiser of "East Africa, Mr C. Trichardt on October 8 saw four lions on Messrs Langridge and Taylor's ostrich farm on Athi Plains. He called Mr Langridge, and the two went - together to try to', shoot the lions. When -, the- two men approached three of the lions 1 made off, but the fourth, a half-grown | lioness, lay down ""and waited, charging twice when the men came 'up to within about 15ft of them. ' The farm dogs arrived land began to worry the lioness, whioh crept into a patch of bneh «ad tried Uk bide

behind the projecting roots of & tree. Messrs Langridge and Trichardt determined to try to capture her alive. They made a loop of raw hide rope, fastened it to a stick, and attempted at close quarters to pass the noose over the lioness's neck. They failed. The dogs were then set on to worry the lioness again, and while the brute defended herself loops were passed round each of her hind legs. The nooses were j drawn tight, and tho lioness held fast until i her other limbs were bound. "Then a cart ; was fetched," and the lioness hoisted into ifc and conveyed to the farm buildings. — The classical description of a dachshund is that it is "a dog two dogs long and half a dog high," but a small boy recently found a nejver way of accounting for the short-legged freaks. " Mrs X has got s. new dpff," he said " I think its legs is wore down short with running after the motor car."
