ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS. " 60ITTHLAUD. — I did not dissect the bird you sent; it smelt rather- "high" on arrival, but irrespective of that, fact have seen too 'many. young turkeys of that age to have a doubt as to .cause' of death. Ihe fact that you lost 40 -last and -all but one this year shows "that 'your' methods of fearing are! wrong;, and unless you 'change them your 'chicks will ' not -survive long enough to "show "the red."' Absolute .cleanliness is - imperative," and the deeping coop should ' be shifted - daily ,- so that they will never , ■ sleep over their droppings or breed vermin, . .to which latter-turkeys are more pione than I the. leet of domestic .poultry. They want.: plenty of cut up green food, amongst *which_ onion tops or chives ' are much relished. *i Liberty ' in" dry .weather is* beneficial, as it ! gives more play to their craving for insect ." life. ,' They -m-ust not get wet; and shelter in -windy weather is^'also a. necessity. Overfeeding is,, if possible, more dangerous with j fouoa turkeys than with cthai birds. If j
tfier* is ample ranee young turkeys prosper better, if reared by their own kind, by leaving them entirely -to the parent bird, and apparently forgetting their existence, and when raised by domestic hens pretty much the same 'indifference should, according to many successful breeders, prevail, barring, of course, the question _ of cleanliness in the roosting quarters — i.e., anything rather than pampering. Fuller information will be found in this week's poultry notes. — Tekrob. L Y. Z.— Th» eggs taken, out of the tins and dry packed will last almost as long as if kept continuously in the liquid. After only 24 hours in waterglass the pores of the shells are cEoked with the preservative.
