INCENDIARISM AND BOBBERY.
WHANGAREI, January 16. Nicholas Maddren, on remand, was charged to-day with having destroyed by fire a house a Kiripaka occupied by George Wetherall and owned by the Northern Cpal Company, on the night of January 1. He was also charged with entering the house of Mrs Ohlsen on ; the same night and 1 stealing therefrom notes and cash to the value of £170. This amount was found on the accused when arrested. Wetherall was away at the time of the fire, and the police hold the opinion that the fire was deliberately, started by someone to draw the Ohlsens away from their home, thus giving an opportunity for theft. Ho cause has been discovered for the extensive grass fires that occurred on the Cashmere Hills on Wednesday, but they are supposed to have been due to youths smoking while Ofi "the hills in search, of rabbits, |3o far as is known at present 2(5 or 30 sheep were either burnt tQ death, ! or W TO bfe jdegtrojred*
