<* A. Ballentine, who only arrived a few days ago, was drowned at Owhata, near j Mongonui, while bathing. The Daily News' correspondent at MiUr i lurst reported on the 15th that Constable , i Bleasel, of Stratford, whilst riding down Stanley road, was struck by a falling tree which had been burned through, and fell across the road. A shocking accident happened at Midhirsfc on the 16th, when a child, two years old, daughter of Evan -Jones, of Salisbury road, had both her legs cut off by a reaping machine which the father was driving. The little one was taken to the Stratford Hospital, where she expired this morning. The child was a favourite with the father, and followed him at his work. How she got into the machine is unaccountable. A Maori named Pangataki Cooper, 30 years old, was found hanging to a tree by a cart rein round his neck at Waipatu pa on the 17th. It is alleged that ho returned home intoxicated at midnight, -abused his wife and pulled her out of bed, afterwards kissed his wife and children, Baid he. was sorry, and disappeared. Mr W. J. Moon, who was taken to the hospital on the 15th suffering from the effects of ee-v©re burns received whilst attempting, with many others, to subdue the grass fires on the- Cashmere Hills, died on the 17th about naif-past 1 a.m. at the hospital. Mr Moon spent a fairly quiet night on Wednesday, and during Thursday hopes were entertained of his -ultimate recovery. Thes© were not destined to be realised, and Mx Moon succumbed to the shock to his system consequent on the severe burns he had sustained. At the

inquest a serdict was returned that death was cau6ed by shock due to severe burn 3 sustained by the deceased. A man named Thomas Corbet fell over a cliff, "Waikari, 150 ft deep, and was killed instantly. It is supposed he missed the track m the dark. „ News has been brought to Waiuku by a Native that Captain Ragg, o"f the steamer Freetiader, was drowned at Point Waikato on the 19th. It is believed that he slipped ~and fell overboard. The inspector of police at Auckland has received a telegram stating that Alfred Neahi, a -sawmill .hand, who was one of -a picnic pariy that crossed the Waikato bar on the 19th, was lost overboard on the bar when returning. Allan M'GorKindale, an engine-driver employed by the Public- Works Department, "was found dead in his bed at Hniroa on the 19th. Deceased was married, and leaves a -wife and family, who are supposed to reside at Hokitika. Edward Martin, an employee on the Laghmor Estate, sustained some rather painful *and serious injuries on the 16th, through being gored by a cow. He .was struck in the abdomen by the horns of the beast, and taken in a very serious condition to the hospital, -where he has suffered intensely, but is now making satisfactory - progress.
