During the broken period ended -December 28 last, the Waihi Grand Junction Gold Mining Company crushed and, treated 2362 tons of ore for a yield of bullion valued; at £4073 8s lOd. This shows a decrease /uponr the return for the full mouth of November, when 3418 tons yielded" £4930.'- The- total output from the mine for 1907 amounts to £75,831 13s 9d, and the gross output to dattt to £89,626- 5s lOd. The figures already published mth> regard to the output from the Waihi mine for the> year 1907 show a -total of £860,299, but it ia tmderstood that the actual realisation of the bullion 'now afloat will yield a- further surplus. It /is expected- that .the total results for the year wilL show not les& than the magnificent sum. of ,£875,080. The Westland .Land Board resolved that in the opinion of the board section 35 of the Land Laws Amendment Act in^ tended by the Legislature as an interprertation of section 83, subsection 1, of "The •Land Act, 1892," -the intention being that a lessee or licensee should prove that he is a bona fide settler before being -allowed to sell his interest y in a lease or license. -Applicants were accordingly notified that they -will be required to comply with the provisions of section 35 of "The "Land Laws c Act, 1907," before the consent of the board is* given to transfer. CANTERBURY. ' During the .past year there were five bankruptcies in Ashburton, as against "nine in 1906. Robert Kennedy, bailiff -at Timaru for 31 years, is dead, aged 67 years. At the Magistrate's Court on -the 15th reference was made by the S.Tffl. and members of the Bar to the long and trustworthy services of the deceased. A workroom in the picture-framing shop of Mr T. It is one of a block which, is insured in the Royal and Standard. A tailor -was 'brought before the Timaru court on the "16th charged with professing to carry on business under 'Special appointment -of the Governor without warrant. This, -under the .act of last -session, is now^an offence. .Defendant displayed a -sign with the royal arms and the words " Under special appointment of his Excellency the Governor."
