THE NEW LAND ACT. '
A "DOUBTFUL" CLAUSE. The Hon. 4 Dr. Fhiidlay, Attorney-genera.!, in the course of an interview with a Times reporter 'on Monday, made a statement in reference to the clause in the rictjr Land Act giving Landoßoards the power to grant sections to ex-emplovee6 of the owner of the resumed estate; also in regard tp a previous statement of his, that the Act was never intended to have the effect given to it by the Otago Land Board. Dr. Findlay said he had not been called upon W advice upon the subject, but,,^had giveii this aa his opinion, it having been represented to him tlaat certain landowners, were dismissing hands- wholesale owing .to the construction put upon the clause by tha Land Board. This had not, as far as ha knew, been verified, but if it was;true, r it was a scandal.* Such an interpretation had never been intended, and if the clause could be found capable of such misconstruction, the defect would be remedies' next session.
