SHALL GBAZIISG BUNS, POVERTY BAT.
GISBORNE, January 18. The Hon. Mr M'Nab on Saturday morning received a deputation regarding small grazing runs. It was stated that the runs in the Poverty Bay district had been taken up in a very rough state and could not return a profit for at' ' least -10 years. All the runs had been taken up on j the understanding that they would not be j reocoupied by the-Government till they were wanted for some public purpose, and the lessees had paid a big, sum -for goodwill. The Minister 6aid that when the leases fell in the Land Board reported on them, and if- it was not possible to 6ettle the ' land any closer the leases were_ renewed. He took it that it was the intention of the framer of the act that small grazing rune should only be temporarily occupied. There was no doubt that small grazing runs in different localities needed different treatment, and grass land "should be' treated differently to bush land. 'It was probable" that the framer of the/act thought more of, the land in his. own district and did not' think small grazing runs would be taken up so much in the North Island.
